Hello all.

I'm trying to figure out exactly how dvd2svcd handles bitrate. The last 2 DVDs that i backed up i chose to have them be 3 and 4 CDs in length. The problem is this, the last CD image (bin/cue) comes out being quite small compared to the others, about half the size (400,000kB). When setting the bitrate, i'm careful not to set it too high (>2756kb). I have a 5 disk changer, and regular CDs are cheap, so I would like to have a high bitrate. To the point, it would be nice if all the CD images were filled. Any ideas why the last image (bin/cue) is not full size (>800,000kB)? Below are links to a screen shot, as well the logs from my last backup, Remember the Titans, 125min in length. Thanks so much for your help.

As I can see in your log, you are using TMPGENc, so there are two limits to be taken into account:

- Max bit rate of SVCD: 2756 kbit/s, that means in an 800 MB CD there must be at least 2400 secs (800*1024*1024*8/2756000).

- Max CQ available in TMPGENc: 100. Actually this is the limit in your encode.

With TMPGENc in CQ mode (IMHO, the highest quality mode) the encoder uses the maximum bit rate allowed for video when it is needed, but if it is not really required, a lower bitrate will be used.

DVD2SVCD (TMPGENc in CQ mode) trys to find the right CQ to "fill" all the CDs. In your encode, D2S uses the maximum CQ (100) because it is really impossible to fill all the CDs.

For this, please :readfaq:, Q36.

When using a quality mode, like CQ, you are likely not to get perfectly filled media. Also, as you are using 3 and 4 CDs, it is likely your movie is maxed out, which means it cannot be compressed less.

If you want to fill your media, use VBR, or better, a combination of both, OPV-VBR with CCE (See the signature). Also, 4 CDs may be a bit too much, and unnecessary waste of media, even for your "5 layer CD player" ;).

I invite you to try D2Sroba.
