View Full Version : PAL DVD's - still proving a problem after 2 months trying previous replies

After posting various questions to this Forum a few months ago, and still attempting to create a quality backup I am still having problems. Could someone assist, this is what I have worked out so far from replies etc.

PAL Dvd's the main movie is (very,very) rarely interlaced how Bit Rate Viewer reports and is progressive?

Only extras and menus are Interlaced?

With this in mind using the Big3 what would be the best settings and options ticked in DoItFast4U, DoCCE4U? I believe I have exhausted all options, but must be doing something slightly wrong as other post#s by users report a perfect back-up.

In DoCCE4U should i tick progressive on the main movie?

In DoItFast4u should I tick de-interlace on extras ?? (or should i edit the scripts and use the decomb.dll ) ??

If DVD2AVI shows no combing for the main movie - and it doesn't in almost all cases - then it is not interlaced, it is progressive. Forget what bitrate viewer says. So select your options on that basis - whether you are using DoItFast4U or any other app.

As for the extras, I never keep them so not sure about best deinterlace settings. On the odd occasion I get an interlaced movie, I leave it interlaced and try to keep the bitrate high enough, keep an eye on the q values in CCE, etc.

Extras are either mixed true interlaced 50i & 25p - Video or mixed 60i & 24p converted to 50i.

with the first case (50i & 25p), you can deinterlace the video (you'll loose motion smoothness and resolution)

with the 2nd case (60i & 24p -> 50i) you should not deinterlace at all, because it makes things really really weird.

All movie clips should be in progressive when were talking PAL, But remember to uncheck the field Top Field First in DoCCE, or else your output would look very funny. All Pal movies I've done so far has been progressive.

we're talking about the extras on those PAL_DVD's

Extras are mostly interlaced.
Check this one one of your DVDs

My answer is still the same, progressive, only the company logo and other small bits are interlaced.

because they are commonly made with a normal 60i or 50i TV-Camera...

I have had a couple recently which were truly interlaced - they were converted from NTSC I think. Only good thing about them was they were the correct length and not sped up.

sometime, PAL movies are gettinge something like a PAL-Telecine-without-speedup, meaning, the twice a second a field is shown three times.

This results on PC in the follwowing pattern

that mean the interlace-pattern shifts twice a second.
13 frames progressive
12 frames interlaced

this can easily be undone using telecide(post=0).decimate(25)

but if it is a pure ntsc -> PAL conversion, the only things will be
- leave it as is is
- try restore24
- try unblendpattern
