My goal is to put my home movies on DVD and transcode the audio from stereo to 5.1. I'd like to "play" with the audio for different effects and whatnot. I've concentrated on the video portion of this project and have just about figured out what to do. Now the audio.
From the beginning I thought that the only way in "NTSC-land" for multi-channel audio was AC3 5.1. When I turned my attention to it a couple of days ago, I discovered that BeSweet no longer supports that. My project is such that I am unwilling to pay big $$$ for an AC3 encoder. OK, so what to do now.
I started using the "GUIDE: Stero to 5-Channel Surround" and have succeeded in producing six mono WAV files. Now the confusion. My player does not support DTS--I think.
In Doom9's DVD Audio FAQ's, I learned that NTSC supports Dolby AC3, MPEG2 or PCM, but that at least one has to be either PCM or Dolby Digital. With my player and because BeSweet no longer supports AC3, I think that limits me to PCM. So now, WAV or AIF.
Confusion Point 1: I'm not familiar with AIF. What kind of format is that? Since it's in BeSweet under PCM, I'm assuming that it meets DVD specs for audio streams. Is that true?
Confusion Point 2: Using the GUI for BeSweet, it appears that the only way I can produce a 6 channel WAV is to use 16-bit. Somewhere in the documentation here, DSPGuru has indicated that 16-bit is no longer supported in the lates builds. Is it possible to create a 24 or 32 bit multi-channel Wave in BeSweet?
Confusion Point 3: Considering 1 and 2 is there a transcoding sequence, for example 6 mono waves TO 6 channel Ogg TO six channel Wave that will get me what I want? OR
Am I just totally confused and transcoding to AIF will solve the situation?
P.S. Just for the record. I'm not asking for a different flavored "free pie." I really respect and admire those who write tools like BeSweet, IFO Edit and DVD Decrypter--to name a few--and don't ask for compensation. I do my best to stay away from the "I want this, I want that, It doesn't work routine." Right now I'm just "stumped" on a situation.
