View Full Version : Dvdshrink still re-encoding when ratio is 100% ?

This is stupid question, I know.
When I backup movie with dvdshrink30beta5 I choose re-author and main movie only. I get movie ratio 100% so nothing should be re-encoded. But when I select Backup it still uses the same time as it uses when re-encoding material...
So is it re-encoding or not? If it is (I can't undestand why?) what program would be the best when I do NOT want it to re-encode anything!
Thanks!

are you removing audio?
if you select 100% on the movie only then it will be 100% on the video. If you are are removing the audio then it will still need to process the files. Along with the fact it's still got to rip the DVD then you probably won't see that much difference in time as it can't rip the DVD as fast as it would like to process it
If it was already ripped then you may see a difference as it can read the data faster to process it :)

Hello you two, and happy new year. :)
Scorpius, unless you use Deep analysis there isn't any guarantee that "100%" will leave the video stream untouched, as this ratio will only be an estimate based on the default "quick" analysis.
If you want to make sure the stream is identical to the original, I'd advise you to use "No Compression".
Unless this leaves you with a wide margin of error (overal size < 4,300MB), one or more titles should be left on automatic (so their sizes can be automatically adjusted to make room for the "Not compressed" title), or Deep analysis should be used first. ;)

if there is no need to shrink the video_ts folder, then all I do is use dvddecryptor to rip it, then make an iso with imgtool classic, then burn the iso.
Not many discs will fit without shrinking, but I have ran into a couple older ones that suprised me how small they are.

Ah, but Scorpius says he's doing main movie only. Their are a fair number of DVDs that will fit with no compression when doing main movie only.
Incidentally, if the DVD is small enough to fit, why not rip it directly to an ISO with DVDDecrypter in the first place? You are of course welcome to rip to files first if you want to - just wondering if you never considered ripping to ISO.

I tried to backup a DVD-5 disc selecting main movie only. I did two tests:
- automatic recompress at 100%
- no recompress
The results were different. The last VOB produced was about 7 MB bigger with no recompress.
The IFO's files weren't different in size, but they were different in contents (DOS FC command).
The time needed was approx. the same in both cases, so I think that a real re-encoding didn't occur, but it's only a different way of processing data.
Happy New Year !!!

Way back when, I think just after 3b5 came out, I remember someone reporting a minor issue with 100% compression ratio. The claim was that DVDShrink trashed the first couple of frames of video (i.e. heavily compressed them).
When doing a backup, I would advocate changing all 100% titles to no compression. Admittedly it's not a big issue, but it is so easy to just avoid it.
