I recorded a WAV stereo that I wanted to transcode to AC3 with BeSweet. The resulting file appears to play in my default player, Creative Media Player, but produces no sound (the time indication does not advance either). All other AC3 files play.

Thinking that there may have been something that I failed to do in BeSweet, I wanted to "fix" it in BeSplit. I opened the file and it played in WinAmp (using Valex's plugin). BeSplit also added header information to it, but it still would not play in Media Player and would in WinAmp.

When I read the "sticky" Ac3 Q&a, in this forum, I learned about filters. I could not, however, download GraphEdit to do what was suggested--got what looked like I get when I open a DLL with Notepad. I did look at Valex's filter instructions and, as a result, did a search for *.ax on my system. The only one that appeared was AC3Src.ax in the Creative\Shared Files directory. I have a Creative SoundBlaster Audigy2 Platinum ex sound system.

Additionally, I don't know whether or not I have DirectShow installed, nor do I know how to tell. I have just crossed into an area about which I know nothing. I'm running XP Home with WMP 8, if that helps. (I installed WMP 9 yesterday and kept getting the messages, when I tried to open ANY of my AC3 files, "This file is not a WIN32 application," so I reverted to WMP 8).

I'm thinking that I probably need to install Valex's filter, but don't want to screw things up too badly. I've shied away from editing the system registry and would like to keep it that way if I can, but if I turn System Restore back on I guess I can't hurt anything.

Would installing Valex's filter solve my problem? Does anyone know of any solutions or "work-arounds" if this is an issue with my sound system?

I'd recommend giving AC3filter a shot, and let us know what happens. You can also try media player 6.4 which you already have on your computer (start > run > mplayer2).

Thanks, KpeX, for the recommendation. I downloaded and installed Valex's filter and was able to play the 2ch AC3 file that I had created in everything but Creative Media Player. I even compiled a movie that I had been working on and the file played in one of the menus as I wanted it to. It also appeared on the list that IFO Edit shows when it plays a DVD file.

I still have to learn more about configuring the filter, the input bitstreams are "greyed" out and I must to some further "playing" to figure out what I can do.

Also, I tried to transcode my 2ch to a 6ch file and couldn't get it to play anywhere. I probably have to learn how to do the transcode better.

I just wanted to post the info that the filter works and didn't screw anything up.
