I have ffdshow 20030523 installed and every now and then I get the following error http://mofoq.dyndns.org/pics/ffdshow_remote_class_window_error.gif
and if I click OK, explorer (and all the windows of it I have open) goes with it.
Any one know what this thing is?

Well, now the error is this (or something similar):
http://mofoq.dyndns.org/pics/ffdshow_remote_class_window_error2.gif
And it happens at random, even if nothing is opened (closing the dialog kills explorer and if I leave it be, it seems to be fine too...though it has a "Stay on top" status and has to be moved off screen).

are you running windows 95/98/me? cause ffdshow doesnt support em and i had trouble like that when on win me.
also, try disable any filters you are using in ffdshow, perhaps they are buggy.
post back your results.

using xp sp1a
updated to build 20040113 and still get basically the same thing:

no filters used, only post-processing....
but doubt it'll make a difference since I get that error even if I'm not playing any videos or have mpc (wmp6.4 or mpc) running.

When does it come up, when you go into a folder with movie files or select a movie file?
Try disable post processing maybe and see what that does.
If you have use overlay mixer on try disable that too.
(if they dont work feel free to turn them back on)

nope...I'm doing nothing related....not selecting any media file (sometimes I'm doing a spreadsheet...other times, burning....or using Word, or just watching TV [AIW] or it's just sitting there, idling).
it's pretty much random and disabling this don't seem to work. The issue only exists on builds on and after 20030523. (though older builds have some minor artifact issues).

Hmmm... this is just a wild guess, but maybe it's Windows' Indexing Service indexing your harddisc, trying to decode random files with ffdshow in the background and blowing up on some damaged/bad/whatever file?
Try turning off the Indexing Service (who needs that turned on anyway?) and see if it still happens... if it's not that, I'd have said it's explorer's preview pane blowing up, but if it happens while you're doing something totally different, that can't be it.
