Does anyone else do this? Did a search but did not come up with anything. Sorry if this has been mentioned. This seems to work better for me than using Avisynth filters with MPEG2 encodes.
1. First I use DVDDecrypter on the DVD.
2. Run DVD2AVI on the VOBs
3. Then I do a single pass encode through Avisynth(no filters) in Virtual Dub with all the highest quality\compression settings(qpel,b-frames,ultra high motion search, etc.), except that I leave VHQ mode at 1, to save a little time. I leave the resolution alone(720x480). I usually set the bitrate anywhere from 2400k-2800k, depending on the amount of movement I guess is in the movie. The resulting encode looks amazing for only being anywhere from 1.5GB-2.0GB. As good as the original DVD. Even if you set the video to full screen, it still looks better than any MPEG2 conversion I have done and watched full screen.
4. I do the same for a second movie.
5. Then for each resulting XVID movie I run it through CCE for a 2 pass encode with the same average bitrate I used in VirtualDub. The resulting 1.5GB-2.0GB encode quality matches the outstanding quality of the XVID avi.
6. I then put both MPEG2 and AC3 audio files(sometimes I convert the AC3 down to lower bitrate to save space)into a DVD Authoring program, and burn it onto the DVD.
-The point of me doing all this, is that I like to put two movies on one DVD. The results of these steps seem to give me way better results than using AviSynth with filters like Convolution3d. It may take a little longer but is well worth it.
