I was looking on the divx website for playback and they recommended a MAC with 400mhz or greater G3. Doesn't this seem a little high for a MAC? Does anyone know if say a 300mhz mac would play divx just fine?

Considdering IIRC that the PC requirements were over 400Mhz it seems about right. Perhaps for a 300Mhz motorolla you might bug the geexbox devs to compile a version for Macs.

Simply that even though Mhz to Mhz a Mac is more powerfull than a PC 400Mhz is not an unreasonable base requirement for a Mac. A much faster PC is required for comparable performance.
The mention of geexbox is the fact that it is quite usefull for playing high resolution MPEG4 content on rather slow machines. Including 400Mhz Pentium II+ processors. If it does that well for PCs and since it is based on Linux. And since Macs can run Linux it should be possible to compile a version of Linux and all the required apps to create a version of the geexbox Linux distro for the Mac. Hence bringing your desire to play videos on a 300Mhz Mac a bit closer to reality. ;)

I wonder what would happen to the computing world if Apple got round to creating an O/S (based on Linux) that could run on both a Mac and a PC?

You would get Darwin more or less. :D No special GUI as of yet. But all the important underpinnings of OSX for Mac and PC.
