I am trying to copy DVD's I already own to the hard drive so that I can see them on a laptop when I am on long trips. Initially I'm using a desktop machine, XP Home, 1Gig RAM, 1.2GHz Athalon. I am lost, that much is obvious, but here's what I've done

I ran DVDDecrypt with Toy Story for a practice run. All seemed to go well. The following files were created on G drive (NTFS, 120Gig, 93Gig free)

VTS_05_5.VOB .vob 386,082,816 VOB File 08-Dec-03 6:30 PM a
VTS_05_4.VOB .vob 1,073,709,...VOB File 08-Dec-03 6:27 PM a
VTS_05_3.VOB .vob 1,073,709,...VOB File 08-Dec-03 6:21 PM a
VTS_05_2.VOB .vob 1,073,709,...VOB File 08-Dec-03 6:15 PM a
VTS_05_1.VOB .vob 1,073,709,...VOB File 08-Dec-03 6:09 PM a
VTS_05_0.IFO .ifo 77,824 DVD Navi 08-Dec-03 6:02 PM a

I loaded and ran Deamon Tools from the tray icon I found:

Virtual CD/DVD ROM > Device0: [I:] No media > Mount Image

From the Select New Image file dialog box I found G:\Toy_Story\Video_TS\
However, this appeared to be empty since I didnt have any of the required file types.

Next I tried DVD Shrink, not necessarily to shrink the movie although that would take up less space. I got the following message:

"DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue.
"The error is:
"Failed to open file
"The reason is: The system cannot find the file specified."

Roxio DVDMax Player sees Drive I, but reports "No Media." so at least part of the Mounting did work (I have no hard drive I).

I apologise in advance to you people who find this stuff elementary, but where did I run this off the road?

The problem you are having is that you decrypted in IFO mode and not in ISO mode.

Start up DVDDecrypter again and choose Mode -> ISO -> Read (or just press R). Select your source drive from the listbox and select where you want to save the image. When DVDDecrypter is done go to Daemon tools and select the .mds file DVDDecrypter created and you're done!

Hope this helped :)

Actually, if u want to process/compress a decrypter ripped DVD with Shrink, you need to do it in FILE mode so you have all files. If you do it in ISO or IFO mode it'll say it can't find the file.

not completely true... you can also rip in iso mode, mount the image with deamon tools and then load it into DVDshrink. DVDshrink is able to read unencrypted disks and you do not have such a messy bunch of files on your hd! :)
