I have a VOB file that I can import the image into Vegas Video 4 by rename it to mpg file. However, the audio (ac3) was lost. How can I capture the audio file with the video?

use Tmpg Dvdauthor (fully functional trial available) by Pegasys. Use the option to load a dvd movie from the hard drive. It will pop up a dialogue box. select the option to extract the movie. Your extracted file will be a mpg with both audio and video perfectly in sync.

A .vob file is not the same as an .mpg file. It is a container for DVD, which can contain multiple MPEG-2 video streams, multiple audio streams, multiple subtitles, and other material.

I recommend you extract desired streams from a DVD vob set through the Streams processing available from IFO parsing rippers such as DVD Decrypter and SmartRipper. If the vob set is already on hard drive, you can use VstripGUI, though it's more complex to use than the other two applications.

jggimi is correct about vob files. However I have extracted many movies from vob sets this way. It will give you a choice of what to select. When you select the main movie it always selectes its corresponding audio.

Vegas can take VOB files if you rename the extension to mpg (as you have discovered) however you don't get the sound (as you have also discovered)

Rip the sound from the VOBs using VOBedit then put the original VOB into vegas and then the AC3 file which you just created can be imported alongside it

Thanks! We are getting close. I used SmartRipper to create the VOB then rename and imported to Vegas Video. Where to download VOBedit?
Shall I import the .mpg into a video tract and .ac3 into a audio tract? Also, Sonic Foundary technical people told me that Vegas Video can render an .ac3 file but can not accept (import) an .ac3 file. I hope your suggestion could work.

Vobedit from the download section at www.doom9.org

Ah, it is possible that Vegas doesn't take ac3.
I have rendered AC3 from it but I don't think I've imported it.

What are you trying to acheive here anyway?

If you don't want the output to be 5:1 sound you can convert it to a diferrent format and import it as stereo.

Do you mean ifoedit? I tried it and it seems not user friendly. I have not figured out how yet. BeSweet seems easy but I ran into problems.

VOBedit will demux the audio and video streams from a set of VOBs

I found ifoedit. I can't find VOBedit.

The link to VOBEdit (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Vobtools/Vobedit06.zip) is on the full software page (http://www.doom9.org/software2.htm). But as I mentioned earlier in this thread, DVD Decrypter in IFO mode can extract selected streams as well.

I need to convert it to a .wav file so that it can be imported into Vegas.

Besweet will do that for you

Yea, I like the simplicity of BeSweet. However, using the wizard mode, it generates a blank note without any messages about success or errors. Using the GUI mode gives no indication either. Both did not convert and I don't know what did I do wrong.
