For the DVD into 1 CD80 rip fans.

If you don't mind, can we share about your evolution for the codec and
container which you use from past until today ?

Here is my evolution :

1. video(divx311) + audio(mp3-vbr) -> .avi
2. video(xvid) + audio(ogg-quality) + chapter_info + subtitle (.srt) -> .ogm
3. video(rv9) + audio(ra8-surround-96kbps) + chapter_info + subtitle(.sub) -> .mkv -> mode2 xcd(.dat)

Thank you.

Here's my "progress" in the ripping world....

1. DivX 4, vbr mp3@~128kbps, avi, black bars cropped, all credits still incuded, no codec installers or autorun features

2. DivX 5.0, vorbis@~80kbps, ogm, black bars cropped, some filtering, credits done at q31, codec installer's bunged on cd aswell

3. 3-pass DivX 5.11 @slowest, 2 channel AAC-HE audio@~100kbps, .srt subtitles, company logo scenes at beginning and all end credits replaced by blank video, avisynth noise filtering, matroska container with chapter info, burned to XCD, autorun menu and custom codec installer and player on the cd

i heartily reccomend type 3 above as it gives plenty of space for the video :) and i really don't see peoples problems with XCD, it has just as much file protection as SVCD's AFAIK and they're a pretty popular format

well... me too I guess :)

1. divx 3+mp3 CBR -> avi
2. xvid + mp3 VBR -> avi
3. divx 5.1.1, 4 pass, 4th @ slowest, manual tweaking @3rd, 5th because I forgot to put the right bitrate + vorbis audio @ 0.2 (i'm no golden ears) -> ogm using gordianknot to setup resolution and for calculations, manually tweaking the avs, vdubmod: setup jobs and encode over night, dvd2avidg for d2v, besweet for vorbis audio then 2 weeks later remember that I forgot to add the srt subtitles (I use tags), after demuxing then muxing check the spelling in the srt and correct iove ionely to love and lonely then demux and mux again.

now i started to make encoding logs (i.e. text files where I write what I was planning to do) but shhhh, don't tell my professor that I learnt to plan ahead or he'll start expecting results from me...

Originally started using DivX 3 then DivX 5.0.2. Tried WMV8 (urgh!). Apart from testing. I now use mostly the following: -

Method 01
Video - DivX 5.1.1 2pass standard (no BiDi, no GMC, no Qpel, no PVE)
Audio - Mp3 @ 96kbps
Container - AVI
Image Pixel Frame Size - 720x576 Anamorphic
Movies encoded with no end credits or sub titles
Movies encoded for use with an Sigma Xcard (c/w JovePlayer) or DVD/Mpeg4 standalone player. Hardly ever PC.

Method 02
Video - Mpeg4 2pass standard (no BiDi, no GMC, no Qpel, no PVE)
Audio - AAC @ 64kbps
Container - MP4
Image Pixel Frame Size - 720x576 Anamorphic
Movies encoded with no end credits or sub titles.
Movies encoded for use with an Sigma Xcard (c/w JovePlayer). Hardly ever PC.

Method 03
Video - WMV9 2pass slowest
Audio - WMA9 @ 64kbps
Container - WMV
Image Pixel Frame Size - 720x576 Anamorphic (WMV auto AR's the image)
Movies encoded with no end credits or sub titles.
Movies encoded for use with an Sigma Xcard (c/w JovePlayer). Hardly ever PC.

I will sometimes crop the mattes away but hardly ever resize. As I prefer to retain the original vertical image pixel resolution.

Also. I've just started using Philips CD90-R's (800MB). Very nice!

Cheers

EDIT: I forgot to add the bit at the begining. Doh!

I mostly just encode music videos captured off of DVB and played back on an HTPC. And this is relatively recently so no evolution has occured, yet.

Video XviD 2-pass 1000-1100kbps
536x472 original and clip 8 pixels from each side to remove black borders.
Clip black mattes if applicable.
Black square to cover up stupid moving logos.
Audio Original mp2 (192kbps)
Stored in MKV, anamorphic from 528x464 to 620x464

I want to move to a more advanced codec like WM9 or RV9, but I haven't yet decided which. Probably RV9 though because of the great support that I've seen from karl_lillevold on both this forum and on #helix.

But I want to start expirementing with ultra-low bitrate encodes using:
Video RV9 50-70kbps?
Audio Floggy 4-8kbps?
Video size would obviously be small so I don't know if I will even bother doing anamorphic resize of it.

Same as your, except at step 3: I'm sticky at xvid+vorbis. :)

I am using FFMPEG(september2003 build) + Vorbis in matroska format lately. It's working great and gives me much better compression than even latest XVID. Haven't tried Real so far though.

I use quant based encoding @q2 and if that doesn't fit I use quality based encoding @95%. Resolution I am aiming at is 576x320, hard to compress movies get only 512x288. Whatever space I got left is for the audio. And I cut off the credits part, I never watch those. I do use the whole audio track though.

Most movies under 2 hours fit at the size of 800MB this way. Instead of using XCD I burn my movies @800MB CD's. Works great! :)

1. AVI with MP3 audio (divx 3.11)
2. (about 1,5 years ago) AVI with 3 and more audio streams (divx 3.11)
3. AVI with AC3 (rarely DTS), MP3 and SRT/SSA subs (divx 4/5, xvid)
4. starting with MKV (xvid)
5. AVI and MKV with AAC, DTS, AC3, SRT, SSA (xvid)

I never used OGM.... AVI could do everything I wanted to (since I've used a DVD recorder for 2 years already, saving space by using vorbis audio was not necessary...AC3 was just fine)

I started with avi + vbr mp3 (SBC/nandub) and then went over to OGM + chapter info + dual language vorbis (xvid) - and stayed there as it works rock stable for me and everyone else I know.

I use whatever suits my rip best, and what's to my liking most. My "evolution" in that sense would be:
SBC+VBRMP3+AVI
SBC+Vorbis+OGM
XviD+HE-AAC+MP4

But that's cause I don't rip movies often.

Maybe I'm a bit old-fashioned, but still...

sbc + mp3-vbr -> avi
xvid + vorbis -> ogm

depending on the source and my needs! ;)
