View Full Version : [Stupid n00b] Should the first pass of 2 pass xvid be very small?

I'm still learning. I noticed that my first pass has a projected file size of 4200 kb. Is that right?

I remember reading that the first pass encodes at a higher bitrate and then uses the info to do the second pass smaller. So why is my first pass so small?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but i've been reading this site for hours and have no idea.

Edit: I'm using vdubmod + Xvid 1.0 beta 2. This is under the "vdubmod status window".

If you check "discard first pass" when hitting the "..." behind the slection "first pass" your first pass file will be very small. That's intentional, the file has no useful data then - it's the statsfile which is the interesting result of the first pass. Use the included statsreader, open your statsfile and you can see the "real" first pass size.

Thanks Koepi.

Looking through the stats file it looks like it didn't get the entire first pass, and vdubmod reports that the first pass was "aborted" after many hours of processing. Then my second pass is over 1GB when i selected 630MB. I'm going to play with it some more and see what I'm doing wrong; I may have run out of disk space.

Also, should i be doing my passes as Avi or Ogm if I eventually plan to put them in an ogm?

Thanks again for helping me learn this stuff.

AFAIK it doesn't matter if it's .avi or .ogm
