Hello...
I've been doing DVD ripping for some time, and in the past I've always just cropped to the picture. With the new automating tools like AutoGK and Dr. Divx, they are preferring to decrease the resolution so that there will be less pixels to compress, resulting in a better picture quality, albeit smaller.
I've been doing side-by-side rips of 720 wide and auto (usually around 5xx wide) and I'm not noticing any difference when full screened.
Just for some background information, I'm running a resolution of 800x453 (infocus x1) so in either instance, the image will be zoomed. I figure that the more zooming is necessary, the more pixelated the image will be. If it goes down to 550 px wide, then it will have to be zoomed about 50%, whereas a 720 px wide will be zoomed very little.
Aside from that, it would seem to me that if the image on the DVD is 704x200 (as an example) it would be better to keep the image 704x200 rather than have the encoder zoom it to 720x220 (or whatever).
What do other's think?
