It's nice to see from elta's specification (http://www.elta.de/english/artikel.asp?Artikel=8883+MP4&Artikel1=8883&x=68&y=17), that this player supports DVD-Audio!
I wonder what else it can do, that the competition (Grand Prix & Ascomtec DVD-3004) can't?
Cheers

Seems it got one today ;)
Plays pretty much the same as the grand prix.
Does not play xvid gmc, divx audio and .srt subtitles (have not tried others)
Definitly the best divx player i had (and i have had a Sigma and an ESS player)

elta has told me about some future plans for alternative audio and container formats but I don't have the mail with me now. as for DVD audio I'm still trying to get official confirmation.

does it support b-frames?

I just made some tests with Xvid 1.0 and it cannot play files with bframes>1 smooth.
DivX with bframes is ok.

XviD 1.0b1 is buggy and i wouldnt use it for testing! try some older dev-api3 builds

I have only tried 1.0 because it was the same with older builds :)
But i have not used a devapi build before, maybe i try this.

Hi Zhnujm,
Are you able to confirm the chipset in the player. Is it the MediaTek MT1389?
Can it play DVD Audio?
Can it play RAW Mpeg1 and/or 2 encodes
Can it recognise the MP4 container?
Cheers

Well, I nearly made a "mistake" and ordered the Elta - but this by only browsing the www.alphaundomega.com website (Austrian). Its all in German and I don't speak the lingo.
Try it if you want one, and see if they deliver - I didn't put in any credit card details etc like ususal but I got a confirmation with a UK address.
At 199 Euros + delivery I thought I would wait a while until the MTK settles down a bit - see what the support is like.

btw, it does NOT support DVD-Audio, even if its written (in really big letters) on the package.

does NOT support DVD-AudioThought so.. DVD audio capable players are still in the upper price regions. Interestingly enough, I never got an answer to that specific question from elta (I do have something about their future firmware plans though.. @SeeMoreDigital: MP4 is not on that list).

Yep, the DVD audio part in Elta original link has now been removed!
Shame really.

I would be happy if a simple subtitle solution (.srt or something ) is on that list...

there's WMA in AVI (4 weeks), Ogg media (2 months), srt subs (I presume.. and I didn't get a date) and as for 3 warppoint GMC, they're looking into that without a timeframe.

How difficult is this to do. I wonder if 6Ch WMA streams in an AVI would work too!
I think it would be quite cool to have both WMV and WMA streams in an AVI.

I don't think I have a single DivX with WMA audio (I did a few movies with it.. and while I'm not an audio freak I could definitely hear the bad audio quality so I quickly gave up on that). I'll see if I find something to throw at my players (yes, I got the Gran Prix :)

Do two 5.1 AC3 streams in one avi file work? I encoded lots of movies that way. Are there problems with sync/muxing/switching audio tracks? Unfortunately the elta is sold out at Plus, but as soon as they get fresh ones... :D

2x AC3 was possible using the old elta player so I'd be very surprised if it didn't work in the new one. I'll get the player for testing but I have a codec comparison to run first so don't expect any results before 2004. But I do have the MediaTek based Gran Prix which afaik is capable of 2xAC3 so I wouldn't expect any problems (and I'm going to run a quick test on my Gran Prix soon, I still have the files I used on my elta 8882)

Problems with Xvid and bframes are solved with a firmware update.
And 2xAC3 works also of course.

Do we have any more information about the when DVD-Audio support will be added back into the player? I was looking forward to getting a few DVDA disks
Thanks

It was written on the package of the newer models that DVD-Audio support can not be added with a firmware update.

That is a shame, I wonder why it was originally advertised as having this feature then? surely it was working at some point for them to initally release it saying that DVDA was support

If the Mediatek-chip is apparently able to decode DVD-Audio (at least Mediatek says so at their home page) why is it that the Elta 8883 can't play it?
Any idea's?

I suspect it down to licensing!
