View Full Version : I've got the Jitters!

Hi, I had some home movies on VHS that I captured as MPEG2 files
with my WinFast card. I then used Ulead Video Studio 7 to burn this
onto a DVD+R, with settings at 24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps, Video
data rate: 6000 kbps, LPCM Audio, 48 KHz, Stereo (the same rate I
captured).

When I play this DVD back on my standalone player or my PC, any
movement, even slow, seems to jitter or jump. If I view the original
MPEG2 file, it is fine, no jitter, when played on my PC.

Is there something I'm doing wrong in the process or with the settings
I used?

What other applications can I use to convert and burn these files
that I have? Or in a more general sense. If I have a .mpg file from
the capture, what format must I convert it to and what apps can I use
to do that conversion.

I have Roxio 6 and several of the freeware apps I obtained from the doom9 site.

Any advice on what I should try?

Thanks in advance!

please describe this 'jitter' a little better!

do you see lines? or does the movement seem a bit jerky? or does the picture jump 'forward' and 'backward'?

It was that the picture jumped. However, I looked closer (again) at the MPG2 file and it had this jittering too. I must have had a problem at recording time :(

I still am interested in hearing about what tools I can use to convert and burn MPEG2 files, other than using ULead's VideoStudio 7). This program works, but I'd like to know what other options I have.

Besides some small annoying problems with VideoStudio 7, I have encountered one wierd problem. I burnt four disks using the same method; capture from VCR using WinFast card, burn as mentioned via VideoStudio 7.

The two that were commercial VHS tapes that I own, play, but I get no audio, when I play them on my standalone DVD player (Pioneer Elite 47Ai). On the PC they play fine. The two home movies I burned, play fine.

The disks were DVD+R, which the player does not specifically say it supports, but I have seen one DVD+R disk of a commercial recording (DVD) that did play.

Any ideas as to what may be wrong what methods I can use to determine what is wrong? Right now I don't know if DVD+R disks are going to be marginal, if I need to do something special for commercial recordings, or if I did something wrong in the authoring process.

Thanks for any help...

Hi-

I can't help with much of the post, but the one report on your player at DVD-R Help (http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDname=Pioneer+47Ai&Submit=Search&Search=Search) suggests that yours can play DVD+Rs fine. So maybe it's the brand of media it doesn't like, or maybe it doesn't like VideoStudio7 or some settings you're using, or the way you're burning the blank discs.

But killingspree or someone else may have a suggestion or 2.

Thanks. So I have two open questions, if anyone can care to comment...

1) What programs/process can I use (besides ULead VideoStudio) to burn from a MPEG2 captured file?

2) If I have a DVD+R disk that is not playing correctly on my standalone player, is there a way to tell if the disk has a correct layout/format?

For (2), there seems to be many possible causes (with comments):

a) Player cannot play DVD+Rs (I can play some disks, but not others of the same brand, so this seems unlikely)
b) The player is marginal with the brand of DVD+Rs [Imation] (the PC DVD player works fine on all 4)
c) Some setting/adjustment is needed, when burning from a captured video of a commercial source (as home movies work fine)
d) There's a problem with VisualStudio 7 burning or processing the file

I guess I can try some experiments, like trying DVD-R, trying a different brand of DVD+R, or trying a different program to burn and/or prepare the image.

Suggestions/guidance anyone?
