How to insert subtitles??

Hi to all, first of all I hope I'm posting this in the right section.
I have a dvd backed up but it hasn't got any subtitles I have found the subtitles and I would like to insert them to the backed up dvd so that I can view the movie with subtitles.
My problem is I don't know how to do it.
Could someone please help. If you have any links to guides on how to do this please post them.
