View Full Version : Question about audio sync

I use GKnot 0.27 to rip some DVD's and the first ones were very good (little mermaid, starwars), but when I upgraded to GKnot 0.28 and ripped the Hunchback of Notre Dame (Disney) the audio track is not synchron with the video (about 1 sec).
- Is that because I did something wrong or is that because some DVD's are more 'difficult' to convert?
- Should I correct the audio with the delay box at Divx Encoding Control Panel?
I use DivXPro 5.1

Hi Djien, and welcome to the forum.
- Should I correct the audio with the delay box at Divx Encoding Control Panel?
Well, you should certainly fill in the delay there. It's listed as part of the AC3 file name. Assuming you used DVDDecrypter in IFO Mode when ripping the vob files to your hard drive (Mode->IFO), then that should be all there is to it.

Thank you manomo. I 've used robot4rip to rip de vobfiles, which uses DVDDecrypter. I will take a look at the settings of DVDDecrypter.
The file name is HUNCHBACK_Track_1_English_delay_0ms, so I fill 0 as delay, but that doesn't work.
Actually I got 2 audiotracks: one mp3 and one ac3. Which one should I take?

Yes, make sure and check the Mode. With the newer versions of DVDDecrypter (which comes with the newer versions of GKnot), IFO Mode is no longer the default setting.
With a 0 Delay, you don't fill in anything, and that's not the problem then. So my second choice for what's causing your problem is the ripping mode. If that doesn't work, then we can try something else.
But, if the audio is off by the same amount all the way through (doesn't get any worse), you can fix it in the finished movie. Open it in Nandub, set Video to Direct Stream Copy, and then go Audio-Interleaving and change the Delay in there. Then go File-Save As AVI.. and give it a different name. Then wait a minute or 2 and check the results. It may take 2 or 3 tries to get it just right. And this will work with MP3. AC3 is a bit different.
That may save you from starting all over again by ripping the vob files in IFO Mode.

I guess the MP3, as you wouldn't have created it unless you were planning on using it.

I checked the mode and that was okay, so I tried correcting the audio the way you described, but it seems that the amount of correction is limited. I've corrected the audio with steps of 50ms and above 300ms it doesn't get better.:(
What can I try now?
I just found out that if I play the file with ATI-player instead of DivXplayer 2.1. the audio is synchron. (Corrected your way with 550ms delay). What's happening?

Hi-
You said originally it was about a second off, which is 1000 ms. And it can be a positive or negative delay. If the sound comes before the lips move, then you set a positive delay. Or if you see the flash from the gun barrel before you hear the gunshot, then that's a negative delay. But the amount you can adjust the delay isn't limited. I've set huge delays before.
But now you say it may be a playback problem, which is very possible. I don't use the DivX Player, so I can't help with that. You might try another one, like the BS Player, which I am familiar with. Maybe it's time to change players. :) You can find a bunch of them in Doom9's Downloads section. You might find one you like better than the DivX Player.
And maybe encode another movie also to see if you have the same problem afterwards.
What's happening?
Don't know. Maybe the DivX Player just doesn't like delayed audio.
Edited later: I got the delays wrong. Edited it above.

After some experimenting I got the audiotrack synchron with the video. I tried PowerDVD 5.0 and it looks (and sounds) good.
Thank you manono for helping me out. I learned a few things more thanks tou your advises!

Hi-
Thanks for the kind words, Djien, but I don't deserve any credit. You pretty much solved the problem yourself. I didn't think it might be a playback problem (and I should have) until you mentioned it first.
But I'm glad the problem is solved. Good luck.
