I have tested some xvid parameters, all with vhq=1:

Bframes = 0 ----> Perfect
Bframes = 1 ----> Perfect
Bframes = 2 ----> not so good

qpels --> doesn't works
GMC --> doesn't works

All tested with november 2003 firmware (252N)

you could try packed bitstream for xvid (not really a good idea for archival purposes) but to find out if there's a general problem with multiple b-frames on the player, or if it's just a matter of packaging.

I've tried the same test clip with the "packed bitstream" and it works perfect.

Don't know what did you say that is not really good for archival purposes.

This was the options I set over a 600 frames test clip (chapter 2 from full metal jacket)

Motion Search precission=6-Very High
quant type=h.623
vhq=1 mode decision
b-frame quantizer=150
b-frame quantizer offset=100
b-frame threshold=0

with no b-frames & no packed bitstream ->5.4mb -> perfect in player
with b-frames=1 & no packed bitstream -> 3.8mb -> perfect in player
with b-frames=2 & packed bitstream -> 3.6mb -> perfect in player

2-pass with 6417 in desired kb

I have tried the same clip muxing vbr mp3 (lame -b 32 -B 192) and works perfect too.

Isibaar once told me but I don't recall by heart. I think it has something to do with not being specs compliant.

BTW.. 1 chapter = 600 frames? I have my doubts believing that. Assuming a framerate of 24fps that's 25 seconds of video. And you should definitely use longer test clips than that.

I was only compressing 600 frames to test what options works with the Hardware player Easy Home VX, it was a PAL 4:3, with 28pixels crop up and down. Now that b-frames works with packed stream (thanks for the advice Doom9) I'll try a large clip and a chapter with more action than the chapter 2.

If someone want's to test some options of xvid in this player write the post and I'll try to do it.

Ok, Now I know what you mean. It can't be viewed smooth in any player:

Doesn't works with bsplayer+ffdshow: it looks like going backward each 4 frames when you play a packed stream avi
mplayer for gnu/linux say "vop not coded" and pause a little avery 4 frames.

For compatibility it would be better to use bframes=1 and set of "packed stream" in XviD options.

I've tried some clips with the xvid 1.0 beta.

* Default settings+Adaptive quantization+BVOPs (Max consecutive VOPs:1) looks perfect.

* Packed bitstream off+Max consecutive VOPs:2
doesn't looks perfect, a small stop each 10 seconds
