I have the lastest 7. Is it worth it the upgrade to 8? Will I see any difference?

Thanks

No.
Make the update to 7.11 only.

But it is not gone bad either so you can safely upgrade it.

I ran some comparisons about 6 months ago and concluded that IC7 had the best quality (MY OPINION) out of the available tools. Just ran an encode with IC8 and it fell far behind the same rip done in DVD Shrink... Doesn't seem like a real encoder like IC8 should ever trail a transcoder like Shrink, anyone else noticed this lack in quality (read much increased macro blocks) with IC8?

Hi - "Doesn't seem like a real encoder like IC8 should ever trail a transcoder like Shrink"

- IC8.x [as v7.x] is a transcoder.

To answer your question and not throw another transcoder into the mix.

Yes it is worth the upgrade.

1. You can do movie only
2. You can do movie only with the menu.
3. You can burn directly to DVD and not create a pdi.
4. You can encode in high quality or high speed.
5. IC8 replaces removed video with a blank screen that plays for about 1 second. Most other transcoders the blank screen will play for the original length of the removed video.
6. It is the best Transcoder out there when using high compression for example when doing episodics to 1 disk.

"Just ran an encode with IC8 and it fell far behind the same rip done in DVD Shrink"

I was under the impression that the transcoding engine was the same with IC7 and IC8.(high quality)

I have neither time nor motivation to see my subjective opinion through, sorry for even making a comment.

hmm, i upgraded a few weeks ago (purchased IC8 upgrade online) and installed it. result: IC8 would hang on one of my movies (forgot which one it was :( ) without having even deselected anything in the menu. IC7 had no problems with that movie at all... therefore, i can't say much about IC8's picture quality, but i reverted back to IC7 and have been using it since then because i felt it was more stable.

from my past experience, i can definitely say that IC7 is far superior to dvdshrink in regards to picture quality when you need to compress at higher levels -- i would guesstimate anything below 85% of the original movie size. blocks are getting very visible on fast action scenes under dvdshrink. wouldn't it be great if dvdshrink could incorporate rejig's engine?

@Demi9OD: dude, why getting so defensive??? this is a "discussion forum" and i certainly appreciate anyone's input -- which includes YOURS ;).

my 2 cents.

As I said earlier I tried both versions on several movies and haven't had any macroblocking in either of them.

Sorry Adbul, just a long frustrating day before the post . I think I will run IC7, IC8, and shrink on Two Towers this weekend, that should be a pretty demanding task for one disc using any encoder.

Demi9OD,
Since mine is a new computer, I only want to install the better of the two IC programs, so I will be interested in your research.

I found IC8 extremely buggy and went back to IC7.

IC 8 trailing DVDShrink? I had the best results with IC8 compared to DVD2One and CloneDVD, could you give some more details on your results with DVDShrink vs IC 8 (speed/quality setting, hidden settings modification, ..)? I wouldnt expect DVDShrink to be better.

Can IC7 do Movie Only>?

No not on it's own, I mean you could process with say DVD Shrink first using zero compression and do movie only then use IC7 to reduce the size & transcode.

could you not create new IFO's using DVDFab or Ifoedit to make a movie only out of a normal IC7 ouput that has a menu?

I've personally upgraded to IC8 and then gone back to IC7 twice. Once when it was first released, and again when the recent update became available. My problems:

1. The discs that were created had random problems (e.g. picture freezing) -- it may be a coincidence, but it happened on the first two discs I created after the upgrade -- after many, many successful backups with IC7.

2. It created coasters when it did the immediate write on my burner. I had to enable "write to disc first." That might be my burner's problem -- but it really doesn't matter "why" when I'm tossing the DVD-R in the trash after a two hour process.

3. The quality of the output does seem to be better with IC7 -- but that could all be in my head. I do have to say, though, that in my experience I've never had a DVD-Shrink copy that was anywere nearly as good in terms of quality as IC (7 or 8) -- but then again, it's all opinion.

I plan to stay with IC7 until the next IC8 update is released -- and I'll try it again...

Thanks jdobbs...I had set aside this afternoon to reload IC8 and apply the patch. Guess I'll stick with 7 and wait for the next patch.
