'DivX certified' MPEG4 player from German discounter ALDI ...

... for 79,99- € , and now for the life of me i cant find the flyer anymore to provide you with some details or a scan even.

On first sight it was looking like one of the 'slim-line' models from KiSS, but i am not sure about that. If i find the flyer again i will give an update ...

Strange, the website (http://germany.aldi.com/cms/product_01/index.html) only shows a DVD player, and for 79,99- € ?? Where is this crazy flyer ..... Grrrrr ....

Its branded as TEVION ( ALDI brand ), advertised for Monday, 24th November, with the following features

- DVD
- VCD
- S-VCD
- DTS
- AC3
- WMA
- MP3
- MP4 ( container ? audio ? )
- Picture CD
- progressive scan
- optical/coax digital out
- DivX certified

I dont think anymore its a Kiss device now, no idea where they get it from ....

actually.. standard players (thus based on the old sigma chip and the ess chip) have reached that price level.. but with the usual playback limitations (high bitrate 3.11, no gmc and qpel, no alternative containers and usually no subs). I've seen two players in similar price ranges last week in a local store. But MP4 usually means MPEG-4 simple profile @ DVD resolutions, and nothing more. MP4 players are in the work, but don't expect too many too soon.
I'd rather have that ASP capable elta player to see if it can live up to the hype.

Edge Another useful thing to note is that, all Medion PC's come with a pre partitioned hard drive (3No partitions). One of which stores the O/S, driver and software. So provided all your data is not stored on the main boot partition the PC can be formatted and up and running again in around 30 mins.

And they give you the O/S and software on CD's too!

I got one of these, this time last year, for my step father. And it's never had a problem... So you could say it's even idiot proof - I'll get in trouble for that remark!

Yeap. Gateway did that hidden partition for a while here in Europe. Listed as "Non-Dos partition" in fdisk. Very useful indeed.

so are most others. But I haven't had any problems with my non certified elta player (but my dad constantly manages to break it somehow to the point where you cannot use it anymore.. I've never had any problems). But so far there is simply no player where I wouldn't have a but in my recommendation. If you stick to the certification specs with your content you shouldn't have any problems with most players, but if you don't, all bets are off.

Personally I can't understand why DivX bangs on about certification!

My current understanding is, as long as you don't generate DivX encodes with Qpel (or GMC in some cases) and don't exceed 414,720 pixels, they should work fine with every DivX capable hardware player!

Now when the new elta 8883 player arrives, if it can cope with Qpel, then DivX certification or not... all DivX encodes should play, regardless of the settings used.

So what will be the point of certification. Or have I misunderstood something?

it means that all hardware manufacturers wouldnt come around asking dxn to be able to put the divx name on their standalones (not for free in the future i guess ;) )
it would mean that perhaps more "not that professional" people will use the divx5 codec instead of others to be sure to be able to play it on divx standalones...

all in all i dont care about the divx certification and buy the elta 8883 :D

So, as suspected. It's pretty pointless!

It's just another way for DivX to promoted their name in the Mpeg4 market place!

I'm certainly with you regarding the Elta 8883. There is no doubt having players that can support ASP (advanced simple profile) encoding is the way to go. Despite the fact I personally don't encode using Qpel.

so I guess it is not DivX Certified.. if it does say it is "DivX Certified" I might try buy one to test it out see if it fits one or two Christmas presents, and If I'm dissapointed I can return it claiming they posted a wrong info saying it being DivX Certified.


I wonder what player corresponds to the Medion-ALDI one.. is there a company listed on http://www.divxnetworks.com/certified/about.php which could be one working with DivX Networks to respect the DivX Certification thing?

According to a german board it uses the Mediatek chipset, seems they had the same player in France too.

btw, I was talking to the DXn and both elta 8883 and the MTK based players Aldi is selling are DivX certified. You might notice that they have the official DivX logo on the package and player front, but I haven't spotted the DivX certified logo anywhere so far. Obviously, the players scream for a super certification but that is most likely not going to happen before 2005. I'll be able to tell you a lot more about player certifications when I have some time to condense the information I got into a suitable form.
