View Full Version : Tell me how dumb is encoding two movies at the same time?

Well i'm not a newbie but i'm totally sure that this question belongs at the newbies. ;) So due to my desperation that my movies take soooooooo long to be encoded (Pentium 3 650) i'm opening virtualdub two times and i'm encoding two different movies at the same time. And yes i see better results as far as time is concerned. Plz tell me how stupid is this and what problems may occur? :)

i though about doing the same thing on my celeron 500, but i really don't have the time to do that, but does it take longer to encode 2 files at the same time than 1 at a time?

stupidity and desperation are two totally different things.

hi,
well if you didn't have any problems (like vdub crashing - or alike) i don't see any reason why this should be stupid or dumb or anything else.

i would not really expect a large difference in encoding time though! so question is, if it is ok for you to occupy the computer for such a long time (2 movies = approx 2x time) which would actually be days! :)

Hehe i guess you're right. Anyway somehow and i don't know why it's surprisingly faster encoding two movies at the same time instead of one at a time (at least in my computer). The only problem is that i don't know what errors might happen doing this.

you'll see this when you're done encoding. :) i can't really make any predictions.

pls describe 'surprisingly faster encoding times' a little further :)

it won't have any adverse effects, apart from the increased time taken. you'll need a lot more memory to do 2 vids simultaneously though.

If one or both of the processes is returning errors, it would increase encoding speed quite a lot. When I encode in CCE, if I see the RT go up to 3, I know my avisynth script has an error. Of course you won't know till you look at the results (don't just check the beginning - check in the middle and the end too).

Other than that, I can't think why you'd get faster processing. Even if you have ample memory and hard drive performance, task switching should slow processing down a little. You don't have dual processors by any chance?

 just bcoz of curiosity, how much time is estimated to complete the " task " ;).

14 hours for both instead of 8 hours each. Btw why you roll your eyes, you don't find my computer pathetic? :o

Are you saying that instead of 9+9=18 , now it takes only 14 hrs  . Then its worth doing 2-encodes at same time.

Btw why you roll your eyes, you don't find my computer pathetic?

If I use slowest mode in DivX and VHQ4 in XviD, my PC is more pathetic than yours. It will estimated about 18 hrs for total two passes (3/4 of whole day - - with power failure occuring without any prior notice, you can think how pathetic is my situation)

By the way, what codec are you using now and settings ?

Divx 5.11 b-frames and GMC on, psychovisual preprocessing off, one pass 1150. Standard mode.

if you do 2-pass encodes, just make sure that you don't write to (read from) the same stats file, it actually can happen and doesn't look that great ;)
