Hi, I am using the latest version of Ifoedit and cannot seem to get a multi episode disc to split...It puts everything but an 8k vob file in disc 1 folder (7.5 gigs)
...
I have tried a few different split points with no success (including the reccomended default)
...
I notice vob #5 is in every PGC...they use vob 1&5 for 1 2&5 for pgc 2, etc...could this be the problem?
how to solve?
thanks,
Bob

I suggest that you review either Doom9's or Mpucoder's guides for splitting a DVD. Make sure you have followed allthe steps. If you are still not successful, please post the exact results.

okay, I am still having the problem on step 2 of this document. http://www.doom9.org/mpg/ifoedit-2dvdrs.htm
the problem is that no matter what split point I choose, ifo-edit copies almost the entire dvd-r into the disc 1 directory.
perhaps I am reading the wrong guide and you can point me in the right direction.
thanks,
Bob

Following that guide should work. I don't mean to be insulting, just double-checking. Make sure you have "Create Subfolders: Disc 1 and Disc 2" checked. Double-check all your settings as you go through the guide.
If this doesn't work, we'll try something else.

okay I have gone through it very carefully and I still get the same results.
the folder I start with after using dvd decrypter
14,336 VIDEO_TS.BUP
14,336 VIDEO_TS.IFO
6,211,584 VIDEO_TS.VOB
172,032 VTS_01_0.BUP
172,032 VTS_01_0.IFO
402,671,616 VTS_01_0.VOB
1,073,739,776 VTS_01_1.VOB
1,073,739,776 VTS_01_2.VOB
1,073,739,776 VTS_01_3.VOB
1,073,739,776 VTS_01_4.VOB
1,073,739,776 VTS_01_5.VOB
1,073,739,776 VTS_01_6.VOB
1,073,739,776 VTS_01_7.VOB
290,510,848 VTS_01_8.VOB
14,336 VTS_02_0.BUP
14,336 VTS_02_0.IFO
22,003,712 VTS_02_1.VOB
then I run ifo edit according to the instructions using vts_01 and splitting at the suggested point.
I get two folders, in disc1 folder here are the files:
<DIR> ..
14,336 VIDEO_TS.BUP
14,336 VIDEO_TS.IFO
6,211,584 VIDEO_TS.VOB
172,032 VTS_01_0.BUP
172,032 VTS_01_0.IFO
402,671,616 VTS_01_0.VOB
681,535,488 VTS_01_1.VOB
681,453,568 VTS_01_10.VOB
681,340,928 VTS_01_11.VOB
311,083,008 VTS_01_12.VOB
681,254,912 VTS_01_2.VOB
681,545,728 VTS_01_3.VOB
681,457,664 VTS_01_4.VOB
681,289,728 VTS_01_5.VOB
681,504,768 VTS_01_6.VOB
681,297,920 VTS_01_7.VOB
681,576,448 VTS_01_8.VOB
681,340,928 VTS_01_9.VOB
and in disc2 folder, here are the files.
<DIR> ..
14,336 VIDEO_TS.BUP
14,336 VIDEO_TS.IFO
6,211,584 VIDEO_TS.VOB
67,584 VTS_01_0.BUP
67,584 VTS_01_0.IFO
402,671,616 VTS_01_0.VOB
8,192 VTS_01_1.VOB
the result is still playable from my HD, but I cannot fit disc1 on a dvd-r
so please help me understand what is wrong.

added five minutes after posting I just re-read your initial post about the VOB's and PGC's. The answer to that question is "yes." This post will, hopefully, get you past that.
Thanks, benbonham, for the information. This is really interesting. Although I didn't use a calculator, a little quick arithmetic shows that your main movie contains about 7.2G of information. 7.2G is about a three hour movie so you should get two discs with about 1.5 hours apiece in them. However, after the split you have about 8.4G, and, as you say, it's all in Disc 1.
The thing that intrigues me is that you have two titlesets. It looks like Titleset 1, VTS_01_XX.VOB, contains your movie. Titleset 2 probably contains extras. I'm also guessing that there are a number of audio and sub-picture streams as well as layer breaks and angles. And if you didn't strip these out, IFO Edit may have gotten confused.
 :D
I'm assuming that you want to split the disc and be able to toss the results into a player and watch them. The first thing, of course, is to get the split to work. Then you can do the magic with the menus and chapters.
When I split discs, I have IFO Edit do all the stuff that I want it to do. Strip streams, languages, etc. So, here is what I recommend. From your original movie, open VTS_01_0.IFO in IFO Edit. The bottom half of the screen with contain the "VTS Overview." A couple of lines down you will see a line that looks like:PGC_1 (program chain): [Title(TTN): 1] [02:59:11.21 / 30 fps] (Programs: 54) (Cells: 56) (uses VOB-IDs: 1,2)
Take note of how many VOB-IDs the movie uses. Below this you will find a table of chapters, times and positions that look like: [Ch 52] [Pg 52] [Cell 54] [V/C Id: 1/54] : time: 00:02:25.14 / 30 fps [Pos: 02:51:29.08] [Frames: 308678]
[Ch 53] [Pg 53] [Cell 55] [V/C Id: 1/55] : time: 00:07:41.28 / 30 fps [Pos: 02:59:11.06] [Frames: 322536]
[Ch 54] [Pg 54] [Cell 56] [V/C Id: 2/ 1] Layer Br.: time: 00:00:00.15 / 30 fps [Pos: 02:59:11.21] [Frames: 322551]
You will want to retain all the VOB-IDs that indicate a chapter and eliminate all of those that contain a layer break--the last line in the above list. Write down the VOB_IDs used by the chapters--do not include any VOB-IDs from indented lines. When you get ready to split, make sure that "Strip Streams" and "Strip VOBIDs" are checked. I also have learned to check "Remove Ilvu/Angle Point". When the screen for selecting VOB-IDs comes up check only those that you wish to keep.
Please be aware that doing this will get you the movie only and nothing else. Once you get the split successful, you will have to complete the guide by editing for chapters and menus. Also if you want to keep the extras and angles and all that we have to do something different.
2COOL has a lot of guides, available through the "sticky" at the top of this forum that may also help.
Keep us posted. :D :D

yes, I was wondering if it was something like this...the fact that vob 5 at end of every pgc seemed strange but I am still new to this.
so I will try removing them and let you know how it goes,
