View Full Version : Different VOBs, same IFOs created?

OK, this one might be a little weird, but I have my reasons.

What I'm trying to do is reauthor the entire menu structure of a dvd without changing the movie VOBs at all (except for renaming). I mean, I want the movie VOBs to be byte-for-byte identical to how they were on the original (like I said, I have my reasons). DVDlab seemed like it might enable me to do this since it accepts VOB files as assets and says that they're not changed. Unfortunately, a file comp reveals that DVDlabs does modify the files at least slightly when it compiles a dvd. What's interesting though is that if I replace the new VOBs with the orignals and hit GetVTS, IfoEdit doesn't change anything. Even if I do a create Ifo files on the original and new files separately, the resulting Ifo files are identical. This leads me to suspect that I might be able to author the entire DVD and then replace the new movie VOBs with the orignals.

What I'm wondering of course is if the resulting DVD is going to work correctly. I've only done tests with small files and limited menu structure so I could determine whether I should spend the time with DVDlab redoing the entire disc. I don't have any idea really how much of what kind of data about the specifics of the VOBs is stored in IFO files. If IFOEdit sees the files as close enough to identical to not change anything, what are the chances of problems arising with the disc?

Should work - I use DVD Lab regularly to make menus for original VobSets that I DONT run through DVDLab at all....

Do you mean that you just make a menu with DVD Lab and then somehow combine it with the original files? What do you use to do the combining so that the Ifo files work out to have the info from both? That was what I was hoping to do originally, but I'm not familiar with any programs that might do that.

Check out this guide - its got all the relative information for this route and allows multiple VTS (wich you don't need in this case)

What I do is to use small clips made with DVDShrink in DVDLab as dummy films.
If you want scene selection you may be right in letting DVDLab mux the whole film but you can still replace it with the original afterwards. See my guides:

Making a multiple VTS with Ifoedit for a Menu produced with DVD Lab (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=58791)

Thanks a lot for those guides. I do indeed want a scene selection menu, but I think I could use your method and just use a dummy movie with the right number of chapters if I wanted to.
