Quoted from the ass-specs.doc :

\a<alignment> <alignment> is a number specifying the onscreen alignment/positioning of a subtitle.

\an<alignment> numpad layout

I tried both of them and didn't see any difference. What is a numpad anyway (Sorry, my english dictionnary doesn't mention this word) ?

If you use \a the alignment corresponds to ssa alignment values where A+B=C = \aC (A vlues can be 0-subscript, 4-topscript, 8-centered B values can be 1-left, 2-centered, 3-right)
so A=8 (centered) + B=2 (centered) = C=10 (both centered) which = \an5

where as \an uses the traditional numberpad on the right side of a standard keyboard

7 8 9
4 5 6
1 2 3
0

At least that's how it was explained to me
