Old threads did no help, they all got the same answer but no one seems to be able to tell me where I can go to try out the solution.

I get no sound, so I want to try switching from Mic in to Line in, or vice versa since what ever it is at now isn't working.

I have no little speaker at the bottom corner of my desktop, so I went to the Control Panel and went to Sounds and Multimedia but I didn't see any recording settings.

How can I switch them? Thanks.

I don't know what soundcard / driver you have installed. I also don't know your OS release, as there may be some differences.

But if you don't have the little speaker in the task bar, try going back to Sounds and Multimedia, and click on the Audio tab. In W2K that I'm using right now, the tabs are Sounds, Audio, and Hardware. Your release may differ, and you may need a different tab.

If you click on that tab, you should see Sound Playback, Sound Recording, and perhaps Midi settings. To select line-in or equivalent to whatever isn't your Mic-in, click on the Volume button in the Record section, and it should open a new window where you can make those changes. The exact steps you'll take will vary depending on your OS, and of course your soundcard hardware and its associated driver and release level. If you want to check your soundcard hardware and driver, use the System applet from the control panel, to get to the Device Manager.

On this laptop that I'm using at the moment, the soundcard is an unnamed chipset by Cirrus Logic, and the driver is Cirrus Logic Crystal WDM Audio driver 6.13.10.4159. It uses "Stereo Mix" for what my WME with AC97 souncard calls "Line-in."

Good luck!
