View Full Version : Can we extract menu asset for Scenerist authoring?

I reauthor a movie, adding a new subtitle. In the subtitle's .SST file, I set it as Forced start, hoping the subtitle is automatically shown. When I play the DVD, no subtitle shows up. Entering the subtitle menu, I see that the button "Subtitles Off" has been set by default.
I want to turn off that button, so the forced subtitle can be shown. I find some guides that discuss forced subtitles, but no suggestions about how to do what I need here.
It seems I need to modify the root menu to add a button for the new subtitle, or to activate the forced subtitle. Searching this forum, it seems mostly people create their own new menus from scratch.
Ideally, I like to extract the existing menu and work from there. Using Doitfast4U/ReAuthorist, I obtain the new Scenerist project. Open the project, I hope to see the root menu tract, but there's none. For this movie, it seems the root menu resides in the VIDEO_TS.VOB. I tried VobEdit and IfoEdit to extract it from there but so far unsuccessful.
Two questions:
1) How can I extract data of the menu tracks, graphics and all?
2) What's the best way to enable subtitles, so the forced subtitle could be shown?
Thanks for any ideas/suggestions.

@ 1) you can use vobedit to demux the streams from a vob (so also from a menu)

1) Yes, as mentioned in my post, what discussed in forcedsubs.htm doesn't address what I try to do here. I tried the suggestion there. Not working.
2) I did try vobEdit to demux the VIDEO_TS.VOB hoping to get the menu data. I got nothing back, vobEdit simply returned. When I demuxed the whole movie, I just got back the same thing I already got when DoItFast4U ran.
Some software, like DVDShrink, can detect and display the menus on its GUI. So several softwares can detect the menu assets, but the problem is how to get them out.
Ideally, it would be a dream if doitfast4u extracts the menu track and export it to scenerist so when we bring up the scenerist project we'll see it there.

The menu is not stored in the video_ts.vob
It's stored in the VTS_XX_0.vob Try to demux that one ;)
Also the commercial version of menuedit is capable of this I believe

Just let me know what format might be used by people playing with Scenarist. It is not a big deal to export menu in some other (to what MenuEdit does at the moment) format.

Just bmp if it's a still menu + ac3 audio maybe and m2v if it's a motion menu. + the subpicture overlays in bmp format

Influenza,
I've tried to demux VTS_XX_0.VOB. No better luck.
I'll try MenuEdit. Thanks.

I.e. just to take menu cell apart. I thought there are plenty of progs nowdays which do it.
MenuEdit does save selected frame as bmp. Never implemented saving subpictures as I was told that there is a prog which does it (a post in one of the authoring forums sometime ago).
What about buttons layout and associated commands: do you need to have this as well? Savig buttons as bmp is not a good idea for many menus - buttons are overlapped and you wil not get separate rectangle for each on bmp.

Yes you can extract subpictures using subrip for example.

Extracting the commands (and save as text?) would be nice since this would make recreating the menu in scenarist much easier (don't have to think about the command yourself).

I don't want to save the buttons as BMP. Maybe I was not clear. You need to save the background as whatever (m2v if motion/bmp if still). Plus you need the button overlay (which is a subpicture) that one can be save as BMP. But that comes down to the above mentioned thing: can be done with any subpic extractor.
