Obviously I'm not expecting the drive to write at 4x speed. However, since there were reported problems with 4x media and older Pioneer burners, I want to ask around before giving it a try.
The drive's firmware version is 1031, I think.

Yes, I had misread the label; I meant 2x -RW media. However, my question remains if there are any known problem with using it with my only 1x capable drive.

4x -RW discs? a) your burner can't burn RW at more than 1x, and b) there are no 4x -RW discs because c) the specs for 4x -RW burning aren't even out yet
You'll probably mean 4x -R discs, don't you? I'd check out the Toshiba support pages, maybe you'll need a firmware update, but I'm not aware of any burner that is completely incompatible with 4x -R discs and which would force you to use first gen 1x/2x -R discs.

The Toshiba 5002 is completely incompatible with Princo 4x -R ;) But I know that it can write Verbatim 4x discs at 2x with the latest firmware

The Toshiba 5002 is completely incompatible with Princo 4x -RIs that because the discs are so bad or because Toshiba tries to protect its customers from crappy discs?

They could be written at 4x (Pioneer proves this with the DVR-A05), but i guess Toshiba does not want to spend any time on those discs...so they just limit the speed on them to 1x :)
