i have captured a tv show using my somewhat old averTV studio. the file is mpeg-1 format as far as i know, the file size is 675MB.
i want to cut out the commercials from the video, leaving only the tv show. i am using ulead video studio 6 SE DVD to edit the current file, but the program keeps crashing or just exploding and driving me insane. i have looked at the fourm and tried to understand what others have recomended but i can't figure it out.
so the questions i am asking are:
1. how can i somewhat easily cut out commercials from a mpeg-1 file?
2. then, once i have done that i want to compress the final video.
i am sorry if this has been beaten to death in other threads, but i am newbie at this stuff :) any help would be great !
thanks everybody, for anything

tmpegenc has a very usefull set of mpeg tools, and btw let you cut mpeg1 and mpeg2.
for final compress you could use mpeg2 or mpeg4, lets your eyes decide it ( i record in mpeg2 and convert to xivd...) . For encoding i suggest dvd2svcd or gordian knot.
But, of course, read the varius faq and sticky post over forum, and remember the search button !!!

happy encoding !

I use VdubMod for this type of editing, and also as an MPEG-4 encoder (using GordianKnot as the automation tool, and as the resolution/bitrate/compressibility calculator). Though I don't use MPEG captures anymore, I beleive VdubMod can open MPEG-1 directly. When I did do MPEG caputres, I used MPEG-2 and still used VdubMod by frameserving the MPEG-2 video via DVD2AVI .d2v projects and AviSynth.
These days, when I capture, I typically use HuffYUV/AVI. But I still use AviSynth and VdubMod for editing, whether I'm creating MPEG-4, MPEG-2, or MPEG-1 output. That's because VdubMod can be used in conjuction with AviSynth scripting to edit out commercials, or, more typically for me, edit out captured stuff before a movie's start point, and after the end point.
I use Gordian Knot as my AviSynth generator, regardless what type of encode I create.
This type of procedure may be a little convoluted for the casual capturer.

i have looked in the guide section under virtualdub but nothing really made sence. so i got a hold of a copy of MPEG-VCR V3.0 does anybody know anything about that program? i have cut out the segments and have an audio problem, but i am sure i can figure that out. i just can't figure out how to output the finished file.

OK.....i read the guides on how to use VDub, and i figured it out. i decided to use Divx 5.02 to compress video and audio after i edited out the commercials.
my first concern is that when i open the file that i want to edit i get the following errors:
[!] MPEG: Anachronistic or discontinuous timestamp found in video stream 0 at
byte position 38241778, from 10087077 to 10177167. This may indicate an

i continued because they were only warnings and the commercials turned out to be simple to do, and the directions to do the compressing were set up correctly, but when the first pass was finished i got warnings that i think have to do with the warnings i get when i open a file. i forgot to copy thoses error messages :( but it still finished. and when the second pass started, about 5-10% into it VDub crashes, i meen it tells me that it has crashed and needs to shut down.
i guess i am wondering if my capture device is S*** or am i reading the guide wrong? sorry this post is so long, and i thank anybody and everybody who helps/tries to help!!!!

I got those error messages when I captured directly using my Leadtek Winfast PVR software that came with my capture card. That usually meant for me that I got async audio and it got worse thru the whole capture so there was nothing I could do about it. That's why now I capture to avi via Huffyuv.
