Did a test over the video part of the Star Trek hybrid clip with Decomb and with ScharfisBrain convert60ito24p.avs script.

The script is posted here:
http://neuron2.net/ipw-web/bulletin/bb/viewtopic.php?p=2340#2340

Decomb script is based on former Neuron2 recommendations.
The script proves that Scharfi's method is much better on video parts.

I'd like to see these improvements coming into Decomb and SmartDecimate packages. :D

How about encode Hybrid movie in multi parts.

Pure interlace part encoded in interlace
Progresive part encoded in progresive and then PULLDOWN it.
and then join the clips together.

The movie need to be split in some parts depend
on what in dvd2avi .D2V (maybe 10-20 or more)
hopefully somebody kind enough to make the tools to generate
avs script for each parts automatically.

frame(0-1000)interlace encode in pure interlace
frame(1001-5000)progresive encode in progresive and pulldown.
frame(5001-6000)interlace encode in pure interlace
frame(6001-20000)progresive encode in progresive and pulldown.
etc etc

and then join them as 1 movie.

just my crazy idea :)

@BennyS

Doing that means doing a stream with 24fps+30fps+24fps.

And that's a good idea if you use Variable Framerate, supported by MP4 and Matroska but not by OGM and AVI. Avisynth doesn't support VFR either.

Read this thread if you're interested in the subject:

@VFW/DShow experts: VFR in Avisynth could be good news for Matroska

or read the last Christian HJW post :)

i'd like a variant of BennyS's suggestion for PAL conversions.

when anime gets released in R4 and has hybrid content, it's normally just run through a converter box (60i > 50i), but clearly this isn't good enough. it'd be nice to have something detect the three different modes (60i, 30p, 24p) and treat each differently, for example 24p parts can be IVTC'd and decimated to 25 instead of 24, while 60i and 30p bits get converted the regular 60i>50i way. this would avoid a lot of grossness and artefacts while preserving motion as well as possible.

when i get some time i'll see if this is possible within avisynth... if i have any success (success defined as "greater than 1fps") with frameevaluate or scriptclip i'll post it here.

@ mug funky: those kinds of conversions are already done!
they detect 3:2 Pulldown and make progressive 24p all other parts or the video are converted to 48i. late the video gets speeded up form 24 fps to 25fps and You'll have a wonderful PAL Version of this video.
unfortunately the producers don't use this way very often :(

My thought it is usefull for DVD9 --> DVD5
especially for Movie Serie like Sex And The City
or The Soprano's or other Series
