Is it possible? I'm thinking something along the lines of ripping it on smartripper, then burning the files on CD-R. However whenever I play ripped DVD files on my hard drive I lack some functionality such as subtitles (despite being able to rip subs from the data files).
If it's too much trouble to explain here, a url link will suffice

I´m not sure what did you think, but:
1) you can burn CD-R with "DVD files" - this is called mini DVD
2) you can make your own SVCD from DVD
3) you can do DivX/XviD conversion
4) ...
What sw player do you use for playing your ripped DVD files?
What files do you rip from the original DVD?

Well it hardly seems worth it since DVD burners are so cheap these days, plus you can't play back your miniDVD CD-R's on most DVD players that are out there. So they're not very compatible...if you're just going to watch it on a computer might as well just burn he mpeg2 file directly to a cd-r and watch it that way.

coona, I'm thinking of #1. I can do #3 easily (I do ogms whenever I need subtitles), so I don't need help with that.
However as I said, subtitles don't play when I rip the vob files (using subripper, and I use the 'extract movies' option). So if it's something as simple as ripping vob files and separating them at 700 megs, then all I need help with is viewing subtitles on a DVD program such as powerDVD

Sorry for late reply :( I wasn´t on the net some time...
There is a link to miniDVD guide (I´m not sure if it guide is still actual):

and here are some links you may find usefull :):

And to your subtitle problem. I guess you need to rip all video_ts.* files to be able to select subtitles in PowerDVD.
