Can anyone suggest a DVD player that is SVCD compatible and can play selectable SVCD subtitles? My old reliable Apex 550W plays SVCD with CVD subtitles flawlessly. It has trouble with SVCD subtitles, however. It only plays SVCD subtitles once in a blue moon. Currently, I am looking to buy another DVD player and am wondering if any current generation model will play SVCD with CVD and/or SVCD subtitles like my old Apex 550W. I read that Apex models manufactured after April 2003 has stopped VCD/SVCD playback support. (This is evident by stickers covering the VCD/SVCD logo on the packing boxes at my local retail stores.)

I have consulted vcdhelp.com on player compatibility. However, the information on SVCD subtitle playback is sketchy at best. If anyone has any personal experience with a good player, please let me know.

Thanx

Hi, try this thread: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12782 ... unfortunately I have not bought a player myself recently (still using an old Raite model).

Reports at vcdhelp are sketchy at best, a lot of people are outright clueless, I am afraid (Pioneer players with svcd subtitle support, yeah right!).

I'd recommend you "verify" your player of choice in the shop itself ... take a few sample cds and try if it works OK. Also some players will offer incomplete svcd support (reduced bitrate, no secondary audio, no menus).

My guess is that "low-end" players will be more likely to have svcd subtitle support. If you are looking for a portable (no display) player, give the Nextbase models a try. A friend claims it supports both cvd and svcd subs.
