View Full Version : *** An easier way to do the IFOUpdate step - By Eyes`Only ***

It seems like many people are getting the ifoupdate step incorrect, when trying to follow the method on Doom9's guides. To help with this, I suggest to you an alternate method for moving the files:

Move the scenarist generated .vobs (from only the VTSes that you chose to reencode) from the \0\VIDEO_TS folder into the \VIDEO_TS folder. Do NOT move the .ifo and .bup files. The resulting \VIDEO_TS folder is then the complete set needed.

Reminder: Only copy across the .VOBs from the video title sets that were actually processed, and NOT the .VOBs from the unprocessed sets, as the ones Scenarist generates are merely dummies.

*** IF AT ANY TIME DURING THIS STEP YOU GET A 'DO YOU WISH TO REPLACE THIS FILE' PROMPT, YOU HAVE DONE SOMETHING WRONG ***

Another note: NEVER touch the VIDEO_TS.* files! The correct VIDEO_TS.VOB, VIDEO_TS.IFO and VIDEO_TS.BUP to use is the original ones, not the Scenarist-generated ones. Using my method, that file is already in \VIDEO_TS so you don't need to do anything except make sure you do not copy the Scenarist-generated ones over.

Hopefully my above post has cleared this step up, but if not, lets show an example structure as it should be when you have completed the file moving:

Example: VTS 01 and VTS 03 are reencoded, VTS 02 was kept original.

1) Move the files using the above method.
2) Use IFOUpdate as specified in the Doom9 guides, only on the IFOs relating to the VTSes that were reencoded.

For each IFO you update in IFOUpdate:

The 'Original IFO Path' box should contain the \VIDEO_TS .IFO file.
The 'Authored IFO Path' should contain the 0\VIDEO_TS .IFO file.
The 'Backup IFO Path' should contain the 0\VIDEO_TS IFO.BAK file (autogenerated filename, based on the IFO file)

The final folder you will have will contain:

VIDEO_TS.BUP (FROM .\VIDEO_TS)
VIDEO_TS.IFO (FROM .\VIDEO_TS)
VIDEO_TS.VOB (FROM .\VIDEO_TS)
VTS_01_0.BUP (FROM .\VIDEO_TS)
VTS_01_0.IFO (FROM .\VIDEO_TS, ifoupdated using .\0\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_0.IFO)
VTS_01_0.VOB (FROM .\VIDEO_TS)
VTS_01_1.VOB (FROM .\0\VIDEO_TS)
VTS_02_0.BUP (FROM .\VIDEO_TS)
VTS_02_0.IFO (FROM .\VIDEO_TS)
VTS_02_0.VOB (FROM .\VIDEO_TS)
VTS_02_1.VOB (FROM .\VIDEO_TS)
VTS_03_0.BUP (FROM .\VIDEO_TS)
VTS_03_0.IFO (FROM .\VIDEO_TS, ifoupdated using .\0\VIDEO_TS\VTS_03_0.IFO)
VTS_03_0.VOB (FROM .\VIDEO_TS)
VTS_03_1.VOB (FROM .\0\VIDEO_TS)

Hopefully that made sense.

you're right most of the problems i had where from this part of the job, i often forgot to move 1 vob that was small and i thought it was a dummy but wasn't.
now what i do is compare the number of vob from the original and my backup.
if one is missing i can look for wich one and take it from the 0\video_ts.
if you organise the vob by name it's very easy to know the one missing.

i think the missunderstanding comes from the fact that the tuto says to copy only the vob that scenarist processed and not the one that are small. in fact sometimes you need to copy also some small vob.

Or just do what I do and grab ALL the .VOBS from the \0\VIDEO_TS folder and if it asks you if you want to replace any then just say no because these will be the ones we chose not to re-encode. Then they are left behind in the \0\VIDEO_TS folder to be deleted.

Saves having to remember which VTS's I re-encoded and which ones I left alone.

Cheers...

Cheers... Great suggestion, however I wouldn't recommend this to first timers because it defeats the whole idea of understanding your steps, which is key to troubleshooting later down the road when you run into a snag here or there. ;)

For us familiar with the method though, that's a great suggestion!

That looks like a quote from Doom9's guide. Notice that I DON'T suggest you create a new directory. You're right though, looks like a file is missing there.

my point although not obvious was that along with the ifoupdate part not being very clear neither were some other parts!! making the whole copying and updating difficult for a new starter!

The sad part is, people have already gotten past the most complicated parts of doing a project then get hung on the easiest step. Kinda funny actually :D

well said ShaneZ...i always thought this was the easy part

Im trying to understand this a bit more, what does ifoupdate actually do?

Iv followed all the steps and my final dvd has all the chapters messed up and stops 1hr from the end of the movie :( even though the entire movie is there in the Vobs.

IFOUpdate copies the tables (primary the ones you specify) from the authored IFO to the original (of viceverse - never remember direction)
The need for doing this is to get all the pre/post/cell commands as well as navigation structure. Some of the optional settings will copy the SubPicture/Audio tables, palette information. etc.

chapters being messed up probably isn't from this step however it could be I guess.. Make sure to get "VTS Sectors" either in ifoedit or ifoupdate before trying to play on a settop

I've definately had this type of chapter problem before as a result of updating the authored ifo instead of the original, check your paths again. Its amazing how such a simple thing screws so many of us up. Once you've got it, you'll kick yourself...

ok so i've been doing this with all 4 sopranos box sets...everything goes fine but when i go to burn dvd-video mode with nero 6.3.03 i get this message:

DVD-Video files reallocation failed. The resulting DVD-Video might be unplayable. Do you want to continue?

It burns fine and works in all my dvd players but just wondering what the message is about

It's about nero being crap.

use Img Classic to make the .iso and burn w/ dvddecrypter instead..

htwnrver

seems redundant to make an iso when nero burns it straight from the folder

Looking at the number of postings of D3s7 vs. htwnrver... wonder who probably knows best? ;)

DVD-Video files reallocation failed

ive had that message pop up before...dont worry about it

but to be on the safe side make a .iso file and burn with dvddecrypter instead

ya its cool....i've never had a problem out of the 20 or 30 dvds i've done, just something i've wondered about

lol i couldn't have been any more obvious that it was a rhetorical question.
