Hi,
i have some problems when encoding an avi to mpeg2 + subtitles when using virtualdub and tmpgenc.
First i'll tell how i work
Ow, de movie file is in xvid format

First i start virtualdub, load the movie and get this message: "VirtualDub has detected an improper VBR audio encoding in the source AVI file and will rewrite the audio header with standard CBR values during processing for better compatibility. This may introduce up to 13602 ms of skew from the video stream. If this is unacceptable, decompress the *entire* audio stream to an uncompressed WAV file and recompress with a constant bitrate encoder. (bitrate: 136.2 +/- 19.2 kbps)
Now i go to video, filters and add the subtitler filter from Avery Lee, then i select the subtitle file and hit ok. Then file, start frameserver, and give it a name

Then to tmpgenc: open at video source the avi file, and make an output name, then click load and select supervideocd (pal). then go to settings and choose CBR at rate control mode, at bitrate the bitrate calculated with the bitratecalculator, depending on how much cds will be needed, non-interlace at encode mode, and highest quality (very slow) at motion search precision.

If i now hit start ill get an error message all the time, this time i ignored the virtualdub warning.

If i dont the extra thing i do in virtualdub is going to audio and select full processing mode then compression and select <no compression (PCM)> and hit ok then file, save wav, and it starts making a wave file.
Then back to tmpgenc, at video and audio source is the same file, now select the just created wav file at audio source, when i work this way it starts encoding.

Now for the problems
1: with the first cd, this way the audio and video are out of sync,
with the second cd there were no problems

2: when i cut the second cd into 2 pieces, and want to burn them with nero i get this error message: the following problems were found: stream encoding which is invalid for a (Super) Video CD.
Now you can re-encode, which makes the file to big to fit the cd, or ignore, and it still says the cd is to small, even when it isnt!!

3: i think cd 1 will get to big to fit two cds, when encoded right, cd 2 has the credits, these can be cut off.

Does some1 know how to fix this problem or has anyone other suggestions to make an mpeg2 + subtitles that will fit on 2 cds please or else i have like 20 megs on a third cd and thats a waste.

Thanks,
Jojo

Maybe this is not the best or brightest way but.....

First try downloading toolame and using it as your audio encoder inside of tmpgenc. It seems to handle vbr audio better than the native encoder.

If that doesn't work...

Do a search of the forum for svcd encoding problems there are many post on this subject with solutions and links to software to do the job

or...

you can really beat your head against the wall with this
1. Load your Avi into Vdub
2. Save your wav and transcode it to 44,100 mp2 with besweet
3. save your avi with no audio

install vobsub by gabest
make sure the sub file is in the same directory and has the exact same name (not counting the extension) as you soundless avi
Encode your soundless avi in tmpgenc vobSub will auto load the sub file for you and it will burn in along with you video.
Mux your audio and video in tmpgenc

Cut it in half with tmpgenc.

Burn with your favorite prog

It is the long way around the block but you will still get home

Welcome to the forum

In vdub under audio-->none. Then under video-->direct stream copy. Lastly, under file-->save as. Give it a unique name so you don't overwrite your original

I vdubmod under video-->streams-->save wav. Then audio-->streams-->disable. everything else is the same.

Are you burning to svcd or dvd?

Use it as your encoder inside tmpgenc, what do you mean with that??

Thanks, yes im a n00b

in the second solution you said to transcode the wav file to 44,100 mp2 file, what do the 44 and 100 mean or is that just mp2?
Besweet questions:
- Output mode: which to chose: - Stereo, -Dual Channel, -Joint Stereo or -Mono
-Bitrate: which one?
-FRC presets: i want the movies in pal but i dont know which format they are, and if in ntsc, which conversion to take: 23.976 -> 25.000 or 23.970 -> 25.000?
Thanks

Sorry about the late response, but I am only able the use the forum when I'm at work.

When you open tmpgenc at the menu at the top are options. One of these is to use a external audio encoder. That is where you use toolame. It is a much better encoder than tmpgencs.

44,100 hz is the rate audio cd's, svcd's and vcd's use. DvDs use 48,000 and will not work with the other rate.

If you use BeSweet you will see templates to select in the upper right corner. Until you become more proficient they are a major time saver.

A mp2 is a MPG audio stream. It has been my experience with vbr audio to always encode it seperate from the video. I always had sync issues otherwise.

After you encode you audio to mp2 with besweet and your video with tmpgenc, join the together with tmpgenc under File-->tools-->simple mux

- Output mode: which to chose: - Stereo
-Bitrate: use the svcd template in both programs
-FRC presets: Depends on what GSpot tells you
Go to Doom9 Guides (http://www.doom9.org) and download a copy of GSpot. This with tell you everything you want and need to know about any avi file and even if you the correct codecs installed.

Once you have more experience and had more time to read the forum and guides you will move on to other software and methods, but this will get you where you want to go

There are 2 besweets if im correct,
the command line and the GUI
Now if i start the command line i get this pop-up:
This is a command line program. You can download a GUI for it at:
http://DSPguru.doom9.org
And then all you can do is close it
With the GUI i had troubles too
I chose the wav file,
Output type: MP2
Output mode: Stereo
Bitrate: 224 kbps (im not sure if this is correct)
FRC Presets: NTSC -> Pal (23.976 to 25.000)(Got that from GSpot)
Then there is project settings were everything i chose is displayed
Then i hit GO and only notebook opens, nothing else happens
I dont get it, what is wrong
By the way, you can wait with your answer because ill be back friday from holiday
Thanks & Grtz

First make sure you have the latest Gui and BeSweet. On the BeSweet Gui in the upper right hand box there is are templates. Select the one you desire and double click on it and it will load the correct presets. Make sure the FRC Presets: NTSC -> Pal (23.976 to 25.000) is checked the click the green button Wav to MP2. This should work. It works every time for me.

If that didn't work highlight and copy the complete command from the GUI. Then go to start-->run the type in CMD and hit enter. when the command box opens type at the prompt [correct path i.e. c:\besweet] besweet.exe and past the command. Hit enter

If that doesn't work you have something clashing with besweet. Hopefully you didn't install one of the codec packs (tsunami, ect) available. They just cause problems. I beat my head on the wall for a while before I figured out how big a problem they truly could be. If so uninstall it and install only the codecs you need. Any more assistance with besweet I'm afraid you'll have to post it in the audio forum. BeSweet works so well for me I've never had to solve any problems.

You might want to try another free prog called Headac3he you can get it on the doom9 site also. It's fairly easy to use and it's free. I don't use it much because I think BeSweet is better. But you know what they say about opinions, there are as many of them as there are....

There are other ways to fix your problem than the one I described. A large part of it depends on what software you own and want to use and what result you want.

One other thing. The method for burning the subs I described only works for subs with the srt extension. You will have to convert other types either with subtitle workshop or subrip. If you need more help go ahead and PM me.

Hi,
got the wrong besweet, now the right i think
but theres a problem again,
when i set everything and hit wav to mp2, there comes the select exe window again and in the bottom line is displayed: "You've picked 'BesweetGUI0.6b61.exe instead of"
thats it.
so what can the problem be?
thnx again

Make sure the sub file has the exact same name as the video with the exception of the extention. (i.e. .exe, .avi, .mpg ect) Got to the load button on tmpgenc and select the proper template. Load you soundless video file. Go to the settings button select the 2nd tab and make sure -full screen keep aspect ratio- is selected. Press the run button.

srry to bother you again
but again there is a problem
when i do as you said in the last reply and hit start i get this error:
"File "E:\Films\LOTRTTT\Lord Of The Rings - The Two Towers CD1 na.avi" can not open, or unsupported.
What now?
I guess vobsub doesnt have to be started to make the subtitles into the movie?
Thanks again

It sounds like you don't have the correct codec installed to decode the movie. What codec did gspot tell you the movie was encoded with.

jojo15
26th October 2003, 17:24
at video:
4cc: xvid
Name: XviD
Stat: 2 compatible codecs installed -> when i click on it:
The following codecs should both capable of processing this format:

- XviD MPEG-4 Codec
- XviD MPEG-4 Video Decoder

So..... i guess it's an other problem, i think audio isn't involved because it's a no-audio avi.

Erik_Osterholm
26th October 2003, 20:48
So to verify, you have 3 files? "Lord Of The Rings - The Two Towers CD1 na.avi" (your video stream), "Lord Of The Rings - The Two Towers CD1 na.srt" (your subtitle stream) and "Lord Of The Rings - The Two Towers CD1.mp2" (your audio stream). Is this correct?

Since VirtualDub was able to open your original file, I don't see why you couldn't now open it. Did you accidentally rename your .srt file to .avi?

Also, since @echooff suggested using vobsub, you might have to change the settings in TMPGEnc. In TMPGEnc, go to the Option menu and select Environmental Settings. The last tab should be VFAPI plug-in. Select that. Then you should see something like "DirectShow Multimedia File Reader" and a number next to it. If that number is -1, you may need to change it to 0. Right-click on "DirectShow Multimedia File Reader" and choose "Higher Priority". If that works, great. If not, you can try "Higher Priority" again. If it still doesn't work, choose "Reset" and I'm sorry for wasting your time :)

jojo15

yes thats correct,

Since VirtualDub was able to open your original file, I don't see why you couldn't now open it. Did you accidentally rename your .srt file to .avi?

do i need to use virtualdub at this part??
and no i didn't rename the srt

and changing settings doesnt work

Thanks anyway

ow
i tried something else,
i converted the wav file to mp2 with besweet
then i did the thing i described in the first post,
with frameserving etc.
then the sound was like 5 secs ahead of the video,
then maybe there's an other solution

Load you m2v file into virtualdub mod and set your audio to your wav file. Under the Audio-->interleave option you can set the delay. Once you find the correct delay you can use besweet to encode the wav to a mp2. On the lower left hand side of the Gui there is a option to set the delay. If the delay as determined by virtualdubmod is a negative make sure you place a - infront of you numbers.

jojo15
27th October 2003, 18:02
Load you m2v file into
what is the/a m2v file?

set your audio to your wav file.
i don't understand this either

Sorry didn't see your earlier post.

what is the/a m2v file?

After you encode your soundless avi in tempgenc the resut should be a m2v. Do you have a mpg video with no sound yet?

[QUOTE]quote:

i don't understand this either

Under the audio menu select load. Then select your wav file.

jojo15
27th October 2003, 19:23
Do you have a mpg video with no sound yet?
no i had problems with that,
i posted that earlier,
you didn't reply,
but someone else did, but that wasn't helping

so again when i load the template i want at "load"
insert the soundless video at video source, it makes automatic the same name at output only with the mpg extension, then i hit start and get this error: "File "E:\Films\LOTRTTT\Lord Of The Rings - The Two Towers CD1 na.avi" can not open, or unsupported.
and next you asked if i have the right codecs installed and i replied with this:
at video:
4cc: xvid

So i first have to make a "soundless mpg/m2v"
but that hasn't worked
so.. what to do now??

echooff
27th October 2003, 20:22
From your first post

Now for the problems
1: with the first cd, this way the audio and video are out of sync,
with the second cd there were no problems

This is teling me you have a mpg file. The audio is out of sync , but you still have a file that is a mpg. Am I right?

Go to the tools section of tmpgenc and select the simple de-mux and load that mpg file. This will seperate the audio and video. Load the video (m2v) as I explained above into Virtualdubmod and then load the wav file you got from your avi and proceed with finding the delay under the Audio--> interleave selection of the menu. Locate a section where you can clearly see the lips moving and set your delay accordingly. By that I mean positive or negative values as described beside the values box. Again I usually start at 500 if it is way off. If is semi close you can start at 200. Again once you have the correct interleave offset open BeSweet and, load the wav and enter the offset value and encode it to a wav at 41,000 hz for svcd. You can mux the video with the corrected audio. You can then go ahead and make you svcd.

jojo15
27th October 2003, 20:48
since i've trown away the mpg, i can't tell you yet if it worked

but if i'm correct i have to m2v video and the original wav from the video in vdubmod then make sure the sync is ok, and use besweet to convert wav to wav only with other settings (offset value and 41 kHz)?
And i don't know how to mux
srry

jojo15
27th October 2003, 20:51
forgot something
i got this sync prob while using the mp2 audio source,
don't i need to load that instead of the wav file?
it's just confusing

jojo15
28th October 2003, 07:03
ok
forget my last two posts i think i got it
i have to demux the m2v file from the mpg and load it with vdubmod,
and i have to use the audio from the avi file, or was it the mpg file?
but when is used the wav from the avi i got that problem with nero remember and it just wouldn't burn my svcd, or is that problem fixed when converted with besweet?
thanks

jojo15
28th October 2003, 07:09
also..
i made a mistake i made the mpg again with the mp2 as audio source
do i have to make an other with the wav or is this ok, because only the video part is needed here, isn't it?

i dont see an audio menu in vdubmod

jojo15
28th October 2003, 18:19
now...
i got the audio in it,
i played the m2v file from the mpg and the wav from the avi,
the audio is very little time ahead of the video this way,
but there is no audio menu, so i can't use interleave selection or however it's called

Wasn't availible yesterday. Sorry for the late response. Open your audio menu and right click on the audio stream.

echooff
29th October 2003, 16:16
You want to use the wav file from you avi. The reason fro that is you want to be as close to the original as possible. Every time you re-encode you lose quality. I am at work and can't open vdubmod to check, but if you right click and don't find the interleave function; look under all of the menu for it. It is there. Once you find the correct interleave delay remember to check that option in BeSweet and enter the correct value prior to transcoding.

jojo15
29th October 2003, 16:31
ok,
i inserted the audio via streams -> stream list -> there you can add audio files, when you click on comments there is a box called "value" could that be the interleave box??

Back for another day. This is my last day at work until sunday so hopefully we'll solve this today. In answer to you last question: No. I work in an emergency center monitoring equipment and telecommunications. Boring.

I checked VirtualDubMod last night and I was right.
Under audio-->streams RIGHT click on the audio stream and a menu appears. The first option is the interleave function. When this selection is opened, look at the bottom half of the box and you'll see an input box and a description of how to determine negative or positive values. For negative values you must put a minus sign (-) in front of the numerical value. For positive values just put in the number. No plus sign (+) is necessary.

Again, move the slider over to an area of the film where you can clearly see the lips moving and adjust the audio interleave a little at a time until you are satisfied. Once you have that adjusted move the slider to various points in the movie to ensure it is in sync everywhere. If it is not you have a much bigger problem. btw this is a common problem with mpeg1 tv show copies. The solution for that is time stretching. I use Cool Edit 2.1 for that. There are other solutions (i.e. audio applications) but I have never used them. Nicky's digital solutions web page Located here (http://nickyguides.digital-digest.com/) has a nice explanation for this also.

jojo15
30th October 2003, 15:58

Using Virtualdubmod it is streams. Open that selection and a box will open. You will have buton choices on the right hand side and a list of audio streams on the left. You should have only one choice. Some videos have 2 or more.

First: what went wrong with BeSweet? What kind of error messages did you get?

Second: what was the frequency setting? 48,000 or 41,000?

Third: when checking the delay setting in vdubmod, if it is not in sync throughout, then no point in encoding. Your output file will be incorrect.

Did you do a frame rate conversion on the audio?

Do you own a audio editing application (i.e. Adobe Audition, Cool Edit, Sonic Foundry ect)?

Wow! You answered so quickly it caught me by surprise.

Open cooledit. Load your wav into cooledit. At the bottom right of the screen you will see the running time lenght of your audio. Make a note of it. The entire time including whatever is after the decimal. Load you video m2v file into vdubmod. Move the slider all the way to the right. In the time/frame indicator at the lower middle of the app, you will again see the running time. Even 1 second difference has a hugh effect. You need to determine the time in seconds. So convert the time. As a example 00:05:29:158 will convert to 329.158 seconds.

Go back to Cooledit in the left hand window select the middle tab one of your options in there is time stretching. If the option is not selectable you will have to find a plugin that will load up. I don't have any suggestions on where to find it. Mine came with it. If you can select it, then double click on the option and a little pop-up box opens. Towards the center top is where you input the seconds. Make sure you completely clear what is already there and completely type in your time. Click ok and let it stretch the audio. When it has finished, Click the save as button (top left) and give it a new name.

Load the new audio file into vdubmod and check the sync. Play with the interleaving until you get a good sync and again check it throught the film. Everything should be OK. If not recheck you time stretching and recheck in vdubmod and if necessary restretch.

I have never had this method fail for me. You just have to play with it. Don't get discouraged. Getting used to the different software applications and learning the terminology is the hardest part. Once you have a handle on that it becomes much easier.

One of the mods is probably going to yell at us for making such a long thread instead of going to PM. If this still doesn't work go ahead and PM me and we'll keep trying.
