I'm a packrat and I want to archive TV shows. Problem is that the cable signal available in my area is pretty terrible (atleast on a good portion of the channels). Lots of banding signals always moving across the screen diagonally. Is there anyway to improve the signal? Amplify it perhaps? If you guys need samples of the suckitude that is my cable signal, I can upload some clips, although I'm sure we all know what sucky cable looks like.

Start with your cable service provider. There may be things that they can do to improve the quality of your signal, such as: Replace connectors Replace splitters Rewire splitters to reduce dB loss Replace cables Replace a cable boxThere isn't an AviSynth filter that can replace a video signal that doesn't make it all the way to the end of the cable.

Depending on your geography and cable provider, service calls for signal quality repair may be free of charge to the customer. They are in my geography.

Problem solved. I thought it might have been the splitter (I've got a cable modem too), but it was the quality of the cable. Switched it to a better cable and everything looks great now. Thanks guys.
