Encoding into a Divx

Just to clear something up, I am trying to encode a movie with subtitles. do i encode the movie as an avi first then encode the subtitles or what. i could use the help.

the easiest way would be to use a container format like matroska or ogm to mux the subs wih the audio/video streams
