ok i have spent the last half hour searching the forum and either i'm the first to run into this problem , or i suck at searching :-)

i just recently upgraded my os from 2k advanced to 2003 ent ( i have a msdn subscription so i get to play with the newer stuff , 2003 is basicly xp-pro with advanced server features .. i'm liking it ) , as a result i have had to re-do some of the direct-x stuff and a few of the codecs ...

i downloaded an avi file that has VIDS.XVID in the header ... so i figure it's an xvid file ... i installed the xvid codec and i got no video in media player , so i downloaded divix 5.1 and i got green blocks , BUT it looked great in the divix player .... so i figured somthing was messed up with what codec windows was useing ... i opened the file in graphedit and saw that it was doing a ffshow mpeg4 -> video out .. in graph edit that gave green blocks .. i tried divix -> video out and it looked fine.

after reading the forums i found traces of nimo installed from way back ... luckly their was a uninstall.exe in the program files/nimo and that cleaned it up a bit .. BUT the ffshow->video out still looked bad ( but at least now it works ) ... so i de-installed xvid ... now it plays in media player , BUT it's useing "nero video decoder" ( i have nero 6.0 installed on this machine )

it's viewable , but their is a line of blocks on the bottom of the video ... in graph edit i see nero->video out .. and divx->video out still looks better ...

what i have been trying to figure out is how do i convince the system to use the divx codec and not the nero one? ...

i have changed around the windows nt/drivers32 keys in the registry to try to force it to use divix.dll with vids.xvid files to no avail.

As you can tell i'm not shy about hacking around in the registry , renmame files , etc ( thats why i bought ghost ;-) ) so any suggestion would be helpfull.

It is not bcoz of the divx codec. If u un-install some codec packs there is a probability of removing some other codecs that was not associated with it.So try installing DivX/Xvid codec again or just freshly install FFDSHOW.Sometimes u can have problem by changed FOURCC of video file.

i've uninstalled both xvid and divx , then installed just xvid with no success , then divx and ended up with the same prolem , then i deinstalled xvid and still had the nero codec playing , then re-installed divx and it still likes the nero codec better ...

ok i installed xvid over divx and now it seems to be working .. their is a massive delay if i advance the movie ( sound goes then video catches up by playing very fast till it syncs with the sound ) , but at least i can view stuff now.
thanks :-)

now if anyone knows how to get rid of that delay i would be happy ... also it would be nice to figure out where windows looks to see where windows stores it's data about what to play per video type ..

I hate to say it but if you temporarily remove FFDSHOW and just install the DivX codec, you may find everything will be okay!

Don't forget you don't have to install the entire DivX codec to view DivX files (if you think your file is an DivX file) as you can just install the DivX player 2.5

That said, you may find it easier to create a dual boot system and put all your players on another boot drive. That way you'll minimise the possibility of the odd codec/dll/system file clashes. Which is probably what you're suffering from!

Cheers

nope .. without ffshow and re-installing divx , nero takes over .. i can only seem to get xvid to override nero .. how does windows decide what codec to use ? cauz it's confused right now and i would love to set it straight

i have a similiar problem as you. i am using winxp and nero's encoder is taking over my AVIs! I use media player classic so, i blocked the nero filters but then it still doesnt use xvid, it uses divxantifreeze?! so how do i register xvid to play .avi without ffdshow, please? thanks in advance

Hi-

Installing Nic's XviD Decoder (http://nic.dnsalias.com/XviD-Dec.exe) should be one way to fix the problem (I think).

May I ask how recent this decoder is? Mind me, I haven't kept up to date with the scene but I think Nic has barely kept up with XviD, am I correct?

I think there is a tool to manage DirectShow filter merits (priorities) over at 3ivX.com.. though looking again now I can't see it so it may have been on another site, I'll look around later.
