View Full Version : Matroska shell extension GUI suggestion

Hi,

I guess this goes to the Matroska team. Maybe this is an stupid suggestion, but as a user of this great and exiciting container, and the open spirit that the development team as shown, i will do it anyway. I run on a Windows XP, Pentium III 800Mhz and 320MB RAM. Still that attachements/tag tab in Matroska Shell extension take about 50/60 seconds to show and as we all know, waiting is not what we like. So, if there was a progression bar (like the one in nullsoft installer) that show the status, this will be less disturbing to the user, as we have something to look at. I know is stupid, but still that most of my friends that have some of my matroska DVD backup CDs, don't wait and keep asking me why they can't see the photo or the text that is attached. They just see that the window don't pop up instantly and they have no patience :)

Ok, that's it :)

IIRC The Reload Tags button in the Tag tab does have a progress dialog.
I'll add it to the intial loading for the Tag and Attachment tab.

Download v1.7 (http://corecodec.org/download.php/36/MatroskaPropv1.7.exe)
I added the progress dialog to the Attachment and Tag tab.
The Attachment tab doesn't really need it now because it loads as fast as the Info tab. :D

Hi jcsston,

Thanks about this, that was really fast! :) But i can't get the 1.7 shell extension work on my system. Did unistall version 1.6, then reboot and install the version 1.7. Everything seems fine (popup panel when registering, blabla) but when i check the matroska info, attachement, tags etc tabs into the explorer for a mkv file, this shows nothing at all. No tracks, no basic or advanced information, no attachements (it has attachements) and no tags (it also has tags). SO maybe it's a abug, or it's my PC, don't know really, switching back to 1.6 and everything is ok.

jkwarras
5th October 2003, 17:56
BTW it happens with Gabest matroska splitter (last one) and the last official matroska DSfilter. I've just chek this. Hope it helps.

filewalker
5th October 2003, 21:08
Same is here.
I tested the new version 1.7, too.

It's fast but it doesn't show me the basic information, Matroska Info & the attachment which are stored in the MKV file.
Besides, the thumbnails aren't shown in the explorer anymore.
But the speed is awesome now.;)

When I try to use Matroska Shell Extension 1.7 I receive an error message ("DBGHELP.DLL too old") and current Explorer window craches.
I put various ver of DbgHelp.dll (http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/debug/base/dbghelp_versions.asp) (5.0.2195.6613 from my system32, 6.2.13.1 from FileZilla and 6.2.13.1 from Debugging Tools for Windows) in MSE folder, but it still won' t work.
What ver of DbgHelp.dll should I' ve?

My system:
Win2k SP4
DirectX 9.0b
Matroska Splitter 1.0.1.7

The DbgHelp.dll that comes with Windows XP is the correct version. You can download it here (http://matroska.free.fr/downloads/cdl/dbghelp_winxp.zip)

I'm debugging the problem of Release builds not working,
(ASM is fun ;))

I believe I fixed the bug of it simply not working. Download v1.8 (http://corecodec.org/download.php/37/MatroskaPropv1.8.exe)

Change Log
- 10-05-2003
- Added a AVI Tag Importer, support the extended INFO tags and MovieID tags
- Fixed? a bug that would keep Release builds from parsing the file
- Changed the Main track list to a list-view control, different icons for video, audio, and subtitle tracks
- Moved the CxImage code back into a external .dll

Now I have another problem.

If I just open the folder where all my mkv files are, an error message appears with the info that a problem appeared and that I should email you a self generated file with info about the problem. So I did.:D

After I push the ok button the desktop icons disapears for some seconds till they appear again.

Strange is, that if I ignore the message and look at the mkv information (general, attachments, streams...), it works in a fast way and correctly.

WinXPPro is installed.

Hi jcsston.. First, I'd like to thank you for all your work, and specially for matroskapropv.

But I have somme problems with this extension of the explorer (My OS : Windows XP)

- If the MKV that I select (just a clic) don't have any video_tag, windows explorer bug. It's not only with the last version of matroskapropv that it happens, but already with the 1.6

- Now, with the 1.8 (and with the Build 1071 Update), there is the same problem (bug of the explorer) as soon as I select a "avi" or a "mkv" without video_tag.

I don't understand what is the relation between Video_tags and Windows explorer, but it happened... :(

What a shame ! It's the only problem with matroskapropv I know (with my use)

PS : 'scuse my poor english please

I've just install the new build (awesome that it's only 260KB) but the problem still there: when clicking in tags tab, the progress bar hangs at 70% even with no tags in any stream. But after 40 seconds the tab pops up, without error message to send you the dump file, so maybe this isn't hanging but just the progress bar not showing the real status.

Ok, i have another suggestion (just trying you know :p) for the shell extension and one question.

- Suggestion: It's possible to have in the mouse right-click on a mkv file "File attachements" or "Matroska attachements" or something like that, to go directly into attachements. I think most users will use it if it's easy to reach attachement, as the tags and information will not really be useful to the "average" user that only want to see the movie and the cover, sinopsis, whatever :)

- Question: ¿Virtualdubmod doesn't write matroska tags?

Winterider
8th October 2003, 17:09
Your problem -jkwarras- is the same than mine... try to mux a MKV with a video_tag and there won't be any any problem with the progress bar in tags tab... 5actually, it's the windows explorer which cause the problem)

VDubMOD does write some Matroska Tags

and for an attachments option in the menu, checkout this (http://matroska.corecodec.org/images/prop15.jpg) (under Win98 too:))

About the progress bar not being correct. Can you tell me some more details about the file? file size, app used?

5actually, it's the windows explorer which cause the problem)
It may say explorer crashed but it's more likely to be my Shell Ext.

Winterider: Are you reporting that if a Matroska file doesn't have any Tags it crashes? It should not do that and in all my tests it has not

About the attachement option in menu: is this also into Windows Xp? i don3t remember seeing it in the the shell. Will look at it later.

About the file with problem:

- MKV muxed from and OGM with Mkvmerge (trought latest mmg GUI) latest version 0.7.1 (i think is the latest one).
- Video track: XVID with I-frames only cues option
- Audio track: MP3 VBR with no cues option
- No tags.
- Size: 10 MB.
- Atachements: 1 jpg cover and a 1 txt file.

Good luck ;)

@jcsston

check your emails...I sent you the dump file of the problem with the Build 1071 Update.

If I left click on the folder (where all my movies(AVI/OGM/MKV files are),the error message pops up and the explorer doesn't show me the content(files) of this folder.

Due to the excess number of bug reports I'm getting. I am recommending those who want a 'stable' version (less features) to use v1.6 (http://matroska.corecodec.org/downloads/cdl/MatroskaPropv1.6.exe) of the Shell Ext.
Consider v1.7-v1.9 to be 'testing' versions, you can still download them and I will be uploading updates and bugfixes often. ;)

I've just tested the Matroska Shell Extension v1.9 Build 1232. Works fine on my system, no more crash at all :) But, there's no way to add tags, a warning message pop up saying "Unable to write tags" as it was opened by abother program, and is not. I'm only using it with the shell extension in explorer.

I installed version 1.8

Works fine for me.(win2000) NICE tools. I found a small cosmetic bug:

When i look at the matroska info tab. I see correctly 2 tracks (1 video and 1 audio) When i click on either of the other two(attachments, tags) and than again on the info tab. I see a total of 4 tracks: 1 video Track1, 1 audio Track2, 1 video track 1, 1 audio track2. But only two actually show the correct data.

Alucard

PS i have the following problem. I cant delete nor rename matroska files. "Source in use". I will search the forum now.... (I only installed the shell extension 1.8 and the playback pack 0.5) Suggestions welcome

Yes that's right, when there was no tags in the MKV, the explorer was crashing.... :(

The only solutions were to mux a video_tag... But now, with the 1.9 release (and 1[1].9-Update-1236), it seems to be fixed....

But there is another problem, with the thumbnails... If it's enable, the windows explorer crashes With MKV or Avi files....

The problem of AVI files should not have anything to do with the Shell Ext.
Do you get a crash report of any kind with the mkv thumbnail crashes?

Here's a new releaase. The main new feature is XCD support :)
Shell Ext v2.0 (http://corecodec.org/project/showfiles.php?group_id=15)

Change Log
- 10-16-2003
- Added a XCD parser IOCallback class, supports XCD's now
- 10-13-2003
- Changed some defines and functions to compile with Borland C++ CL Tools 5
- 10-11-2003
- Fixed the bug of the Tags sticking at 71%, I was manually scanning 3 bytes at a time for a Tags element. mkvmerge 0.7.1 doesn't write a Tags element by default and the last entry in the SeekHead was the attachments, which resulted in me scanning about 99.99% of the file
- Fixed a bug of the Reload Tags button in the Tags tab not loading the Attachments correctly. Which caused a crash when you picked a attachment.
- Added a Logging class that writes to a file, the log file is included in the crash/dump .zip file. In Debug build the Log class outputs to OutputDebugString too
- Fixed the column handler crashing, The Get*Tag() methods were out-dated
- I now handle std::exception's in the crash dialog, displaying the .what() value.
- Fixed the track list icons being too close together
- The Cancel button in the loading progress dialog doesn't close the dialog right away but only when the parser has really been stopped
- The Track changer now works with the List View Track list
- 10-09-2003
- Attachment display in the context menu is loaded on-the-fly, when you first try to look at the image it is loaded, decoded, and resized
- Fixed a bug in the thumbnail handler of it crashing if Windows supplied a NULL filename
- Changed the thumbnail handler to use the cache

Hi jccston,

now it works without crashing the explorer!:) :) :)
Matroska Info,Attachments, fileinfo works like a charme.
(I couldn't test the tags info because I don't use them till now...)

Thanks man!Great work!

Despite all, I have one question:
Is it normal that explorer doesn't show me the attached cover as thumbnail although I enabled it in the options...or is it a bug?

Oh my god! My dreams coming true! :) Thanks a lot, the build looks very good to me, no crash. Great job! Thanks a lot. This container is having a lot of new features that grows everyday and it's exciting. A big thaks to all matroska team. The XCD support is just GREAT.

But, i have some issues on my system:

- Context menu doesn't work (aren't there even if enabled)
- Tagging doesn't work: tags desappear when i close shell extension.

Thanks for the reports.

It was a simple bug of me not checking non-XCD files. Download v2.01 (http://corecodec.org/project/showfiles.php?group_id=15)

Change Log
- 10-17-2003
- Fixed a bug in the XCD reader, it didn't seek back to the beginning of the file after scanning for the XCD header. Which caused my scan for a Matroska header to fail.
- Fixed MatroskaInfoParser::WriteTags() to not create empty Multi-* elements, it was also updated to the new track access method
- Fixed MatroskaInfoParser::SaveTagsToXMLFile(), it was not updated to the new track access method

Since build 1193 the Shell Ext doesn't work at all under Windows 98. I'm trying to track down the source of the problem and hope to have it fixed in the next release.

Thanks for this build. Everything works fine for me: attachements, tagging, menus. Great! :)

Ok, another suggestion, just a "fashion" one to improve this great Shell extension. jcsson, feel free to slap me if i'm too annoying asking for things/features :)

As a matroska user, one thing i don't like right now is that basics tags like Descripction, Copyright, Author are not displayed by any Media player (exception TCMP with plugin). So, one thing would be great is to have some kind of information page into the shell extension having this kind of details:

1) Show cover (taking image named as "cover.jpg" or "DVDcover.jpg" and if only image then show this one, or if nothing just take a snapshot from 1 frame of the movie)

2) Title, Author, description, number of chapters and encoding details (audio and video bitrate, subtitles and languages of audio, subtitles files).

As i said this is a "fashion" feature and isn't at all something important, as the Shell extension is really perfect (for me at least). May be for future releases jcsson you may want to take a look at that (or not :p). This will be good just to arrange information in a basic way, to allow average user to see what is really important to him. And usually i think that these are the only information average user will look at.

jkwarras
21st October 2003, 09:12
BTW i know that all this information is showed in the shell extension, but the idea i throw here is to arrange it in a confortable way: one tab showing cover, basic tags and audio/video formats/bitate and languages. Kind of basic "media info" tool information into the shell extension.

v2.2 is out. It is mostly bugfixes, the new feature it gettext support.

- 10-21-2003
- Added gettext() support
- Added an option to change how long the thumbnail generator waits before giving up
- Reworked a lot of the tagging code to use Unicode more
- Removed some old tagging code
- 10-20-2003
- Removed the Logging class, it was causing the failed load under Windows 98
- Fixed the bug of thumbnail generation causing Matroska files to be locked (no moving/deleting/renaming)
- The thumbnail handler now waits at the most 5 minutes when trying to generate a thumbnail via DShow before aborting

Download (http://corecodec.org/project/showfiles.php?group_id=15)

For translators there is a translation pack that explains how to create a translation for all the dialog text.

Great update JCSSton, seriously!
...
But I' ve to report a couple of cosmetic bugs, a request and an insignificant-cosmetic bug... :(
___

0- Please, open this little PNG (I used "img" tag, but... ):
[ SCREENSHOOT REMOVED ]

1- There' re 2 labels with the same wrong value ("Enable Matroska Context Menus") in box A.
1st check box commands a DWord in Windows Registry:
"HKLM\SOFTWARE\MatroskaProp\DShow (Internal Render) Thumbnail Fallback"
2nd check box commands this other DWord:
"HKLM\SOFTWARE\MatroskaProp\DShow (IMediaDet) Thumbnail Fallback"

2- I translated all labels in box B, but 1st one is wrong ("Use Jory's silly Monkey" instead "Leave Icon") and the other 3 are still in english.

3- Can iu please enlarge 1st label in box B? I' ve to write "Lascia icona attuale" but it' s too small. :(

4- I use my own installer to install MatroskaProp.
It copies all files (includes "Lang\Italian\LC_MESSAGES\MatroskaProp.po"), sets some settings (includes "Translation") and registers MatroskaProp.dll... but when 2 option dialogs appear they' re still in english. Of course, if I reopen those windows they' re in italian ;) (or better: "25% of them are in italian" :p).

Did you set Translation to 'LANGUAGE=Italian' or 'Italian'? You will also need write the reg entry before you call anything in the MatroskaProp.dll because it loads the translation when the dll is loaded. :)

When you are finished with any translations please send me a copy and I will include them in the offical releases. :D

In any case "Configure" & "Choose Icon"' s translations work even during the installation now!
I downloaded the translation and it works correctly here with Build 1400.

It works only with the exes or even with MatroskaProp.dll (Property windows, tooltips, ...)?
Do you' ve any other file in "Lang\Italian\LC_MESSAGES"?

Yes the Info, Attachment, and Tag tabs, tooltips, context menus are all in Italian.
The only file you need in the "lang\Italian\LC_MESSAGES" folder are "MatroskaProp.mo".

This build doesn't include any translations yet ;)

Could you try copying the 'gnu_gettext.dll' to your system32 folder?
The problem seems to be that the translation code dll is not being loaded from the installation folder.

Hi,

Just made my first XCD Matroska DVDbackup. File plays great with no problem, no CPU overload, blabla... :)

The only issue i've found comes from the Shell extension. It's supposed to handle MKV in XCD, but i think it's only possible if extension is *.mkv instead of the *.dat that is added when making the XCD. Almost everyone add this *.dat extension because is the XCD extension and avoide playback troubleshooting. So, when showing properties page in explorer no Matroska shell extension menu is available :( No way of seeing properties, atachements, tags :(

Does jcssson have some plans to fix it?

Best regards

PS: I can translate the shell extension into spanish, are you interested in that jacssson or anybody is already doing that?

Hi jcsston,

I've enncontered a "little" problem with your app... at least on my pc.

MatroskaProp v2.2 is installed - if I try to capture in VD with 'multisegment capture' enabled, your app is sending a crash_report and closes VD/ VD_Mod

is this related to a personal system configuration or... ;)

thanks in advance

Sill

It seem like my crash catcher is acting strange. Could you send me the crash report so I could see if it as anything to do with my app?

The problem with that is many of the shell file extension
s are file extension-based. And if I added .dat files I would end up scanning all the .dat files to tell if they really are Matroska files. But I'll add a option in the next release to add the .dat ext.

PS: I can translate the shell extension into spanish, are you interested in that jacssson or anybody is already doing that? No, there are no spanish translations yet :), You can get the latest translation package (A zip file with a readme and a template translation file) here (http://corecodec.org/project/showfiles.php?group_id=15).

May be just adding *.mkv.dat extension will be useful to skip scanning all *.dat files since most of the time poople should keep the original extension and add the dat. So a matroska xcd file should have nameofthemovie.mkv.dat. Obviously some people will not add the dat extension and others will not keep the original extension, but i think that the *.mkv.dat is the most used option.

I tried adding the .dat extension, but then it presented the problem of all .dat files being assumed Matroska files.
For the *.mkv.dat, Windows only looks at the last file extension *.dat no extra .'s allowed.

Maybe this is better than no .dat at all assume as Matroska :) It's a shame having attachements in mkv (in XCD) that can't be viewed. Sorry, but as i don't know anything about programming i will let other people around here help you. Good luck ;)

Maybe you can get in touch with avih, moderator of this section and member of the XCD team to help you out.

I have a suggestion:
in my matroska extension version (v2.2), the bitrate for the video track and soundtrack is not written anywhere. I thought it was always very nice to see it easily.
If this is already implemented, please point me in the right direction.

Hi jcsston,

I have a feature request...

Is it possible to add the "track name" (AKA "title" name)to the "Matroska Info" data?

Moreover it would be nice to select the "track name" and "language" beside the "DAR" from the dropdown list.
So we could change (or define) easily both "trackname" and "language" info for older muxed MKV files (where these infos weren't supported by Matroska).

thanks in advance!

ChristianHJW

'track name' is not a tag, and thus cant be written in the file at the end like any other tag, but is an element in the track header and thus has to be at the beginning of the file.

Unless there was already space reserved for it during muxing, and this space can be overwritten, there is no other way to add 'track name' then remuxing the file .

filewalker
28th November 2003, 17:58
Ok, thanks for explanation

so I have to remux to get the track name info...

Hi, jcsson

Just wanting to know if you have plans to include in the Matroska Shell extension XCD support if *.dat extension is present. As you said some time ago that you have problem with that (how to know if a dat file is a matroska), and no update since, i'm just waiting for that if you're able to achieve it

Anyway, this shell extension is great, just what a matroska user need! Thanks a lot for your work.

MatroskaProp v2.4 (http://corecodec.org/project/showfiles.php?group_id=15&release_id=126)

Change Log
- 01-24-2004
- v2.4 Build 1690 Released
- Fixed two bugs in the context menu Track list, instead of displaying "Video
Track 1" it was displaying "T Track 1". The problem was that I had previously
used char * for the track types. However, I've switched to wchar_t * so that
the translations come out correctly. So the whar_t * was being treated as a
char *, ending at the first NULL. The other problem was that I have a static
buffer/cache for the translations, which means that the return translation is
only good until the next translation request/lookup. I was calling two
translations in the same snprintf() which caused them to be the same.
- Switched the "CodecID:" text in the context menu to use the translated
"Codec ID:"
- Changed a number of the MatroskaTrackInfo elements from char * to
std::string's
- Added SimpleTag support
- Added a bitrate usage display module
- Added YV12 support to the DShow thumbnail generator
- 12-21-2003
- Fixed a bug in the attachment cover dection code, if the keyword "cover"
started at 0 I would incorrectly mark it as not the cover
- Now compiled with the VC7.1 compiler
- 12-10-2003
- Improved the NSIS installer considerably
- The crash catcher is now disabled by default, can be enabled via the
configuration dialog
- Moved the CxImage lib back to a static link, I had problems getting it to
find the cximagecrt.dll on a system.
- 11-16-2003
- Added Delete button to the tag tab
- Updated the import to use the MP3/ID3 tag importer as well as the AVI tag
importer
- 11-15-2003
- Split the tag code into new files
- 11-13-2003
- Fixed the filename filtering to ignore case
- 11-08-2003
- Instead of filtering out all filenames that didn't end with .mkv, .mks, or
.mka. I now search the whole filename for the ext.

The changes most noticable will be the new bitrate dialog, support for the new Matroska SimpleTags, a Delete button to the Tag editor, disabled by-default crash catcher, and the new 'smart' NSIS installer. ;)

Thanks for this new build. The bitrate option looks really good.

It's a shame you didn't come up with a good solution for the *.dat extension. I hope one day it will have a solution or build in support for attachements into MPC or TCMP :)

Anyway: good work!

Installed MatroskaProp 2.5, registred MatroskaSpliter (gabest) matroskasplitter_20040111-2 ....

1) BSPlayer 1.00 build 805 wont play .mkv files (crashes)... wmp9 and mp2 and mpc (internal spliter) do play...

2) Explorer shows "Explorer has caused an error in MATROSKAPROP.DLL ..."
all the time - not only when I browse to folder with .mkv files..

Any help... Thanks.

[EDIT] Well bsplayer issue is related to l3codec.ax, after switching to ffdshow audio - mp3lib plays ok (64kbps mono), but this is not related to this thread...

I know :stupid:
but either something is not working correctly, or, i simply do not know how to use it.

When I open the program by way of the explorer-context-menu- properties dialog and then go to the 'Matroska Tags' tab there is no information in there although I entered value in the Filesegment/Title field in mkvmerge and some other values in the langauge fields of the tracks. Furthermore I am only able to enter 'simple' tags but no Global Tags or prenamed tags like Artist, Year etc.

I acknowledge the possibility that I simply don't get what this program is about because I am trying to use it with my ogm tagging expirience which is not very deep.

BTW does the tool use the installed splitter. so that the reason for my problems might be related to the splitter version I am using?

Thank you very much for your efforts, kilg0r3

This seems like the thread to go for general MatroskaProp problems, so I'll post here.

I've been having quite a few problems with this, and I tried older versions as well.
2.6
- Can't view thumbnails at all
- Doesn't change the icon
- But doesn't crash. It just won't work
2.5
- Crashes whenever I try to view thumbnail. (I can supply a crash report if it'll help)
2.4
- Actually displays thumbnail (yay!), however...
- The video-based thumbnails are upside-down and have colored streaks through them (internal renderer only; IMediaDet doesn't work at all)
- The cover-based thumbnails take ~15 seconds to load, even if they're in the beginning of the file

I'll try to fiddle around with things in the meantime. Despite what my post may imply, I really do like this program. The parts that work (everything except thumbnails) are great. Keep it up! :)

The icon not changing could be from some new dynamic icon code (different icons for files with video/audio/sub tracks).

Sounds like I'm not converting the image colorspace correctly.

This could be from the bicubic image resizing, however even with large (1024x768) images it should not take that long.

I'll check into the thumbnails not working.

I thank you for your quick reply. Just a bit more information: the image I tested it with is 245x340 pixels, and I had the image resizing to nearest pixel. I could open the 'attachments' properties page and see the image immediately, but it wouldn't update the thumbnail for quite a long time.

Thanks again!
