View Full Version : pc viewing: leave 352x480, or resize to 352x240?

I am capturing some VHS material to PC. I capture to avi (Mjpeg compression) at 352x480. I'm doing a couple different things with the digitized video, but one is to make a Divx-encoded file to be played back on the PC at 640x480 or higher. Assuming that I can set my software to play the avi at 4:3 aspect ratio, should I get a better image if I leave the sizing at 352x480, or will this look about the same as it would if I resized it to 352x240 (using the same encoding parameters, i.e. both would have about the same bitrate)? I tried to test but found it difficult to compare side-by-side, esp. as I don't have a lot of processing power for two divx movies simultaneously. I wonder if anyone has either experience with or a greater understanding of the issue they might offer.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I think the general consensus is that the human eye treats the number of lines with more importance than the number of columns, so leaving it at 352x480 should give you a fair bit better appearance.
