View Full Version : cce crash

Hi there to all converting freaks. This forum is my last chance of solving my prob with cce crashing. Believe me I've read all the msgs about cce crashing but I haven't found a solution. Let me explain.
First of all my system:
P-III / 600 MHz
640 MB Sdram
Diamond TNT2
60 GB WD hdd
DXR3 DVD-rom
Win98 (not SE)
DVD2SVCD ver 1.1.1B2 and 1.2.1B2 tried
CCE 2.50 (crc patched), 2.66.01.07 and 2.67.00.13 tried
A month ago I was converting my DVDs to SVCD perfectly with DVD2SVCD 1.1.2 and CCE 2.5 CRC patched, I had backuped more than 20 DVDs of my collection. I stopped for a month due to varius reasons and I tried a week ago to make a new one. CCE kept crashing when creating the VAF file (I'm doing 2 pass VBR) at random frame numbers usually in the first 10000 frames. Windows report a non valid page error (That's the most accurate translation in english of the message I get)
I've tried the following:
recover -> crash
resampleaudio(44100) as mentioned in the FAQ and some posts -> crash
CCE ver 2.66 + ECL -> crash
CCE ver 2.67 + ECL -> crash
DVD2SVCD 1.2.1 + the three vers of CCE -> crash
system monitor indicates that there is free ram to be used about 80 Megs and I have 20 gigs free on my hd
all crashes report the above mentioned error.
I haven't changed or installed anything new in my pc
I wanted to post the log but I erased it by mistake. I'll try to do the conversion again to obtain the log and post it tommorow.
Anyway if anybody has any ideas please respond.
The funny thing is that it worked ok and my pc is stable as a rock. I 'm running a lot of power + ram hungry apps due to my job.

since it seems you're using DVD2SVCD, the log file might help
i'm far from an expert but try to use CBR instead of VBR (just as a test)
are you sure that what you're trying to convert isn't corrupted itself ?

I haven't tried CBR as it is out of my interest but I will just as a test as you say to see what will happen. As for the log file, I'm right now trying to do a conversion in order to get the log and post it. I'm sure the source material is not corrupted because it happend to 4 of my dvds if tried. I rip usin smartripper and never had a prob.

Well, If I had this problem the first thing I would do is run memetest and see if it makes it through tests 5 and 6. That would be a good starting point. http://www.memtest86.com/

Well first of all you have win 98... the CCE is for NT systems like win 2K or XP.
But here is something that could help us to help you:
1.) what is your CPU temp when you use CCE?
2.) have you overclocked the system?
3.) what is your avisynth version (or have you install different version than you got with the dvd2svcd)?
4.) Is the crash every time in the same frame (maybe there is bad frame in the VOBs?)?
5.) have you done the memtest like DDogg said?
__________________
Thanks for the reply. I'll try to be as much as accurate as I can:
First of all, CCE didn't complain about 98. Remember I 've said I had been using it for quite a long time.
1. My board hasn't temperature measuring. I guess it isn't overheating beacause it the pc is stable as a rock. I often use Corel Draw and a RIP program which are both cpu power and memory hungry programs along with CCE and never had a problem.
2. No overclocking at all. Remember I have a P-III slot 1 and my Gigabyte board cannot overclock it besides cause it hasn't bios control over bus speed and multiplier.
3. I cannot find out the ver of Avisynth but it is the very same that came bundled into DVD2SVCD ver 1.1.1 b2
4. No. it is in different frames but always when creating the VAF file. I 've tried many different DVDs and CCE is always crashing when creating the VAF file. The maximum it has been able to do is 85% (of the VAF not the conversion)
5. Memtest ok. No problems at all. But if it was a mem problem, surely I would have had problems with my RIP program.
Tonight I'll set up a new PC at home from the very start, using 98 and then XP just to check out.
Hope after these explanations you might have a clew on what's happening.
Thanks again

ok. Let's admit that it's my system that has a problem. How do you explain that a little time ago it worked fine? I haven't changed anything in the bios or win98 and i haven't installed anything new (besides the varius versions of DVD2SVCD and CCE while trying to find what's wrong)

VERY IMPORTANT UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!
I tried to follow your instructions on single pass VBR and CCE managed to finish the job. BUT!!! the second image was only 100MB and I checked out the mpv file which was 700 MB instead of 1500. From a point after the picture dissapears and a message from avisynth appears in zoom player window : Avisynth: Cought an access violation at 0x0a1f1d5e. attempting to read from 0x0a7ef338.
It finally seems that the problem is in avisynth and not in CCE. I use the avisynth tat came with DVD2SVCD ver 1.1.1 b2
I'll do the whole process again the very same way to see if the memory address remains the same.

This is the last post by me on this thread. I set up a "virgin" pc with nothing on its disk except win98 and the dvd2svcd bundle.
Everything is great. CCE works fine. So it seems after all that it was win's fault. What exactly? I think I'll never know. But I got an image of the disk on a cd just in case, something I strongly advice everybody to do in case the whole bunch begins to behave mysteriously.
Thanks for all the replies
