I tried to do my 1st xvid encoding and it went well.
I wanted the subtitles to be permanent in the movie but it wasn't, so I guess I made a mistake
along the way...

first, when you wrote:
Use the add button to add your 2 subtitle files so that you'll have enough space to store them onto your CD(s) after the movie has been encoded

does it mean the "idx" & "sub" files that are in the project folder?

second:
Then the subtitles. Here you are at a crossroads: If you want permanent subtitles press the Select VobSub Files button and select the ifo file from the 2 files that VobSub has created for you. If you prefer to have subtitles that you can switch on and off during playback and in multiple languages don't select anything here, your subtitles are already properly prepared. The after Borders option is for VCD/SVCD creation only and does not concern us.

I understood that VobSub creates "idx" & "sub" files and the "ifo" file is created in the ripping process and
therefore stored in the "rip" folder (not project folder).

so, which file do I need to add and whrere is location?
do I need to add the "ifo" file or the "idx" & "sub" when doing this step?

thanks

You can select either of the files you mentioned: vobsub needs both the 'idx' and the 'sub' files and will therefor ignore the extension you select in the dialog box. If you have done everything right, you should see two lines in the .avs created by GKnot that looks like this # SUBTITLES
VobSub("FileName") Observe the # mark - if there is such a mark on the vobsub line, then you will not get subtitles.

perhaps I didn't explain myself very well.

I wanted the subtitles to be permanent but instead I need to use
the vobsub plugin the see them (use same name as the movie).

I added the entry from the avs file regarding vobsub:

VobSub("D:\DVD\Projects\MAFFIA_D2_VTS_01_PGC1\MAFFIA_D2")

This means vobsub did create subtitles but I do I make them
permanent?

Was this line in the .avs when you created the AVI? Reopen the .avs in VirtualDub and check that you see the subtitles when you look at the frames using VD's preview features (move the slider to jump to other places in the movie) If you can't find anything, then go back to vobsub and try moving the subtitles around. For some reason it is quite common that you have to move the subtitles in order to see them - and make sure the vobsub line is before the resize command, that can also send the subtitles to vewry much the wrong place. It is also possible that you have cropped off the subtitles if you are encoding a 2.35 movie, and then you must move them back into the picture again.

And to make the subtitles permanent you must reencode the movie unfortunately.

The vobsub line was in the avs file before the resize option.

I didn't see the subtitle when I open the avs file with VD.

I opened vobsub and noticed that the script/language drop down
is set on "Not detected", I changed it to Hebrew, reopened with VD and then saw the subtitles.

Could it be the original problem? and does this option need to be
checked while using GK?
