I'm running an ATI AIW 9000, and for some reason, suddenly, it's capturing is f****** up.
I try using the included software, which I normally do, but that shows the video in as a preview, but when I click capture, the files are empty (ie, Vdub opens it but there is nothing there, not even black video).
Virtual VCR is doing the same thing. I don't know what could have triggered this, but can someone tell me how to fix it?

Sounds like Macrovision. I had the same trouble with my ATI, precluding me from using the card to save my favorite tapes before they disintegrated (I have some over twenty years old). This is a big problem, especially since tapes that old rarely tend to be available new or on DVD. However, working around Macrovision is not a topic for this forum, so all I can say is do a search via Google on ATI and Macrovision and you should find the info you need.

Oh, if this is something recent, maybe it's because you updated your drivers. Older ATI drivers ignored Macrovision. The industry made a big stink, so ATI changed all their drivers to block the record function when Macrovision was detected.

Hmm, it WAS macrovision. How can I stop it from checking for it? These ARE my legitly owned tapes.

I had the same trouble when I was backing up my legit tape of "Monty Python's The Meaning of Life" using my old ATI card. This was a rather helpful page:

None of the downloads work. That FSDrive or whatever they use shows 0 files in the storage.

Guess your ATI card is too new... sorry. Can't think of what else to do other than a general search on Google.

Well, I don't get it. The exact same problem is happening again now, with a tape I KNOW doesn't have copy protection, because I captured some of it a little while ago.

Maybe it's Windows... I've seen some pretty weird happenings with Windows, especially with ATI cards. My brother had nothing but trouble with his ATI card and got rid of it. I had nothing but trouble with my ATI card and got rid of it. I haven't had a lick of trouble since. I tried newer drivers, older drivers, the stock XP drivers, but nothing worked right. I got three crashes a day with the stock XP drivers and six to ten crashes a day with the latest ATI drivers. I got a GeForce FX 5600 on sale for a song and everything's peachy.
