View Full Version : Avery Lee, No support for Divx5.1 in VirtualDub

This is interesting post by Avery from yesterday...My announcement for the week is that I will not be supporting the use of DivX 5.1 in any way, shape or form in VirtualDub. That doesn't mean you can't use it or that VirtualDub will prevent you from using it, but merely that I won't bother answering questions about issues with the use of the codec, and any email about the use of DivX 5.1 with VirtualDub will be dumped into the trash. The reason is the following...Source: VDub Homepage (http://www.virtualdub.org/)

He goes on to say that he can do virtually no debugging at all when Divx 5.1 is installed... due to Divx's softice checks. I presume this is to prevent crackers from working on the copy protection.

is that the way DXN want to force the use of DrDivx ??? kind of outrageous :sly:

hm divx51 works fine for me in vd?

He's just complaining that his debugger won't work when 5.1 is installed.

Doesn't mean vdub won't support 5.1, just that he can't try to fix any vdub problems associated with 5.1.

That means that if VD bombs out while encoding something with Divx 5.1, he can't do sh*t about it because he can't find the error while the 5.1 codec is even present on his system.

He is sincerely pissed off about this because the new codec disables all debuggers. This is more than an inconvenience. It's just plain lousy policy of the DXN guys.

For me, this just gives me another reason to continue in Xvid and not upgrade my DivX 5.05 codec to 5.1.

maybe you're right norxh
if it's the exact reason it's pretty stupid since the 5.1 version is already ... cr***ed

It might also be a fascist policy to force us to use Dr. DivX. I can guarantee you it won't succeed. ;) Look what happened to RamBUST. I've decided to use XviD for good now, this is just nuts.

for the people who want to keep softice running while using divx 5.1 there is some software who hide softice like frogice or ntice, it could be an alternative for this problem.

Bye.

I had a strange experiance the otherday with DivX 5.1 or should I say DrDivX 1.0.3, which incorporates DivX 5.1.

It would seen that DrDivX 1.0.3 has slightly different version of 5.1 (it's certainly not the same as what was in DrDivX 1.0.2p).

I installed the DrDivX 1.0.3 application in the usual way and generated a 2pass VBR encode with it. No problems so far! Then I used the DivX 5.1 codec in MPEGmediator to rip the movie again - so I can compare the encodes from both applications.

Well, no way could I generate encodes using the MV file setting, which was pretty strange because I never had this problem with DrDivX 1.0.2p

It would seem that the new DivX codec is getting more buggy, instead of less buggy!

Anybody else come across this yet?

Cheers

DivX is getting more and more closed every day.
I only hope that one day they'll reduce working on protections and marketing stuffs to concentrate the efforts on the most important thing (at least IMHO): codec's stability & quality.

Quote from Avery Lee:

I can live with games and applications that won't let you launch them under a debugger, but when it comes to a driver that keeps me from using Visual Studio in general, the driver gets uninstalled. Immediately. It is a waste of time for me to verify any compatibility issues with DivX 5.1 if I have to deal with this crap and I refuse to do so. It looks like DivXNetworks is considering adjusting or removing the "protection" in their next release; please encourage them to do so and resume working on the codec itself, which is what people actually care about.

marketing is extremly important... ask Chris :D

otherwise DivX capable SAPs wouldn't exist nowadays but apart from this you and everyone else is right... they should concentrate on the codec!!

Yep for sure, that's why i've written "reduce working" and not "stop working" :)

missed that

The debugger error is a bug. It should not be flagging debuggers like this. It will be fixed.

The funny thing is that activation keygen for DivX 5.1 was on the net after 2 days and for DrDivX 1.0.3 NEXT DAY !!! anyway , so the only thing DivX Networks is preventing is debugging other programs :)

I find it hard to believe these are working keygens. If I was so mercenary, I'd call my spyware app "DivX 5.1 keygen", release it just after the release of DivX 5.1 and watch the cash roll in.

@Lord_KiRon and temporance

Please keep thread on topic. The existence and/or functionality of keygens is not a topic for discussion on this board at all.

I believe that the corporate edition of DivX codec doesn't have debugger checks. Maybe Avery could get that version for personal use?

Personally I have not come across very much official DivX download material. Just stuff thats on the DivX web site!

I've no idea who's supposed to be using it. However, a lot of people are using it. :)

Can you post a link that supports evidence of this "Corporate Edition" existing? I've never heard of it.

Or are you refering to the Pro version?

As far as I know the DivX Corporate Edition is a bundle containing the cracked Pro codec and an AC3 decoder filter.

And you know how we feel about discussing cracked software on this forum...

FYI -
Our latest installers on the website do not have debugging protection enabled. Users should be able to get a version that doesn't conflict now.
