View Full Version : Joining Clips from Different VOB's--Stumped

I'm working on a movie that needs to be on two discs. I don't want to "squeeze" it to one. Additionally, I want to make an Intro for each disc and a "tease" at the end of the first disc for intermission. To make these smaller units, I must extract the desired areas from two different VOB,s. I'm experiencing problems--probably created by me--in accomplishing this task.

The main difficulty I have is that I do not want to relinquish the multi-channel audio tracks. I have been using Easy4 GUI and VOBEdit to manipulate the files. In my truncating and splitting, I get to a point in Easy4 in which I get the message "No Cell ID's"--or something similar. At this point DVDLab will not accept the file and the merged file (containing my two clips) has a colored square frame or two right at the merge point.

I think I've chopped the Cell down to the point at which it is not recognizable by the editing applications. In fact, Easy 4 says that it has conducted a "split" operation and saved the resulting file, when, in fact it hasn't.

I've gone past the limits of my knowlege on this one, and can't figure it out by myself. I'm starting to think that I must, as I split and truncate these files build and rebuild IFO's. I don't know enough yet about the structure of VOB files and what's needed to make a good one.

I tried Chopper, but it freezes and when it does extract doesn't do the operation where I want it to. (BTW: Until I decide whether to go to LINUX, I'm limping along with Win 9x--OK!!!!! Millenium--please don't laugh). Since the version I have to use is not supported anymore, I'm out of luck on that one.

Derrow wrote a guide to do precisely what I want to do

However, this guide indicates the use of ReMPEG2, which, as far as I can tell will convert the sound to stereo. If this is an uninformed conclusion on my part, I would like to know. I would proceed merrily along and chalk the frustration to experience. Additionally, the output is in half D1.

With this conclusion, I'm back to square one.

I could assemble my desired files in Ulead Media Studio Pro and edit as I desire. However, I lose the multi-channel audio. I have tried merging my small VOB's, de-muxing them, manipulating them to a format usable in DVDLab and adjusting the audio synch.

maa wrote a great guide for creating multiple VTS in DVDLab (link below).

I haven't quite yet finished studying it yet, but he talks about editing VTS and IFO. I'm thinking that I might have to do something similar now and that's the point at which my knowlege ends.}

I'm hoping that someone here can point me in the direction I need to go--especially about my knowlege of ReMPEG2 and its output or whether I can do what I want to do in IFO Edit or VOB

The main difficulty I have is that I do not want to relinquish the multi-channel audio tracks. Try using DVD Shrink 3.0 beta 5's cutting feature in re-author mode. It lets you keep all your streams.

You can also DVD Shrink to author your Titles that you want to put them on a DVD. You can then set them up by like you said. Play the intro, movie, and then teaser. You won't have menu though.

Thanks 2COOL for the suggestion. I'll give it a try and let you know.

Additionally, I need to correct something in my original post:

I got two applications confused and missed a guide on Doom9's site. I now know that ReMPEG2 will do Full D1 and since it's VIDEO encoder I don't have to worry about the AUDIO.

If your willing to move to Win2K I find ChopperXP works great for cutting my Vob files. Use the "Display real time output" option and if facilitates really fast searches so you can mark your start and end points easily. (This assumes you have viewed the content and are familiar with where you want to cut - no sound)

To edit to vob files together, I use DVD stream cutter on my cut vobs. Sometimes I get some slight pixelization in the merged piece, but very minor.

Have Fun!
