View Full Version : Changing FPS from 29.97 to 23.976?

Yesterday, I tried to encode The Others with Gordian Knot (motion search of 6, VHQ mode of 4, chromatic motion and Qpel). I found what I think is an anomaly -- it probably isn't, and it probably is that I just am not able to identify a normal occurence and do not know how to deal with it. Opening the .d2d file, I noticed 29.97 fps instead of the usual 23.976. Not knowing exactly what was going on, I just manually reset the value to 23.976 and encoded it. A little funny thing occurs. The movie still looks good, yet it leaves some traces off quick motions "sometimes". For instance, When Nicole Kidman makes a sudden move and hence her hair shifts and heaves (Damn gorgeous! No, I do not have a hair fetish :D ), I notice some traces of that hair movements. The same goes for some other quick motions -- but not all. So, here are my q's.

1. when presented with the fps of 29.976, should I just go ahead with the value for encoding or am I better off to do something to change it to 23.976? (I barely remember that 29 fps is for digital filming while 24 for normal, say 35mm, movie filming.)

2. if the problem of motion traces are not related with the fps, then what is it and what can I do to prevent it?

Thanks in advance..

The conversion has a name and is called IVTC(Inverse Telecine).Get the first step to IVTC herehttp://www.doom9.org/gknot-basics-xvid.htm [From "Step 3: Find the right bitrate "(As in guide)].

How to decide IVTC'd or Force film the DVD video is presented here
http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvd2avi.htm

Then here how it is implemented http://www.doom9.org/gknot-xvid.htm [From "Then we have the field operations."(As in guide)].

Only thing u have to look is if u are IVTC-ing is selecting the inverse telecine Field properties and frame count must be corrected as in little bootom of above link.

There's another fine link that I usually recommend about Telecine and Inverse Telecine: www.doom9.org/ivtc-tut.htm

Will investigate as you suggested, gentlemen. :)

And Jggimi owes me another thorough step by step explanation! (See, Jggimi, how quickly higher expectation caused by the kind action of yours sets me in a bastard mode of operation? :D ) Kidding..

Thanks you, guys..
