View Full Version : keep getting avis of inefficient size grrr...

Somehow I am getting avis in smaller size than I desire. For instance, Gordian Knot tells me that I am getting 1700 birate on average and 0.27 pixels which I set by specifying that I desire a file of 1350mb. But, all I get is like an avi a bit bigger than 1000mb. It seems quite inefficient to get a file of that size. Is there a way to make sure that the avi I am getting is the size I want (therefore, it contains more video information)? Again, I am using Gordian Knot... Thanks in advance...

Thanks for the reply, TUning. Yeah, I am using NTSC and Vbr MP3, and I let Gordian Knot know about it. Since I do not know about "IVTC'd and checked the Correct frame count option," I must not be doing it. :D Could you explain what you meant by them and how to do so to this newbie with wide eyes? :D

Thanks once again, Tuning...

Hi-

You probably just maxed out the file size. The movie looks good, doesn't it? Use a higher resolution, knock off the B-Frames, use better audio, etc., etc.. Read this (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24584).

Is there a way to make sure that the avi I am getting is the size I want

Run a Compression Test in GKnot before encoding to make sure it's even possible to get the size you want.

Thanks, Tuning. I will investigate further on it. :)

Manono, it makes sense. As you may suspect, some of the undersized movies (e.g., Being John Malkovich and The Others, both of which incidentally are darker in overall color scheme) do look good. However, The Thing and Reservoir Dogs fall a bit short of my expectation -- still look very decent, though, as they both were encoded in the max resolution with well over 1400 average birate and 0.22 pixels. I probably should stop worrying about the file size. Perhaps, I should learn to use AC3 properly for the available space (so far, I have been suffering a volume problem with AC3).. Your post and the linked thread did resolve almost all my q's. Thanks a bunch, Manono. :)

I just finished the compressibility check.. All I can see is
<load --> 121% of 0.205 compressibility test> in bits/pixel*frame section of Gordian Knot. Could either of you guys or anyone explain what it means? Thanks in advance.

Yes, you're trying to make the movie 121% of maximum size! The codec has reached it's limits and can't go higher.

If you start searching in the GKnot forum (http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=28) you'll find a lot written on the subject of compression tests and what to do about them, especially if they are oversized, like yours is right now.

It is better to look the doom9's guide than explaining.Check out http://www.doom9.org/gknot-xvid.htm [starting from "And last but not least the compressibility check."(in guide)]
