I am currently looking to buy a new DVD-ROM, but there are a lot of different brands and their price is pretty much the same. This makes it a bit hard to choose one.

I hear the Toshiba SD-M1712 is very liked, but unfortunately I can't find it in any swedish shop (and I'd rather avoid buying from out of the country if possible).

Does anyone have any good suggestions?

Highest priority is compability with DVD-R(W)/+R(W) and second comes the speed.

Agree, the lite-on (LTD-166 in my case) is a very good choice. It's one of the cheapest ones around but it's also one of the fastest and I have had no problems at all reading +R, -R and +RW discs (haven't tried -RW but it should be no problem). It's available in both black and beige and there are even cusom colored bezels available so you can match the color of your pc.

You'll get one for 329 SEK at, for example, www.shg.biz
