View Full Version : Which audio codecs/software to use?

Would one want to use different audio codecs for encoding music and encoding movie audio?

Which audio codecs are best suited (in terms of a given size giving the best quality) for movie audio and music audio?

The only factor in my mind suggesting that one might want to use different codecs for each is that music audio would require a higher bitrate than movie audio, and I presume that some codecs are optimised for given bitrates.

Up till now I wouldn't have used anything but LAME except things change fast and any guidance from the codec authorities at doom9 would be greatly appreciated ;)

Some searching would do the trick, but look @ this (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=61818) thread.
I think it's helpful.

Hope it helps.

Audio codecs:
As for better compatibility to standalone players the mp3or ac3 is good. But if u use only PC for viewing u can think of other audio compression like ogg vorbis,AAC(only for OGM/MKV) which is sounding great @ lowerbitrates.
Video Codecs:
As the latest DivX 5.1 is released,i think it is capable of providing better quality. If u are speed concerned u can use divx 3.11 alpha, which going to be out soon.

I mean,if speed is important u can encode 2hr movie in 4hrs using divx3.11.But this codec is being replaced by other ones soon.
As i have a slower machine i'm using this codec for all my rips. But it is going to be discarded by most of us.And u didn't have much options to play with as like in Xvid which gives lesser frame rates(encoding) and DIVX 5.x(Latest found to have more options and is slower than XVID now when most setting are set to use). if ur not satisfied with this visit doom9's codec shoot out http://doom9.org/codecs-103-1.htm (http://www.doom9.org/codecs-103-1.htm) .:)

if you want your audio to be in 5.1 (multichannel) you should use
- ac3 or
- he-aac (which provides a much lower bitrate with the same quality as ac3). he-aac isnt supported on standalone players by now (ac3 is)
multichannel support in ogg vorbis isnt very good at the moment...

if you want your audio to be in stereo (music or movie), use
- ogg vorbis or
- aac

you can find great audio codec quality comparisons here (http://audio.ciara.us/test/index.html)!

But this codec is being replaced by other ones soon.of course there is no "higher authority" which replaces codecs ;)

If u are speed concerned u can use divx 3.11 alphahm true, but with divx5 or xvid a newbie can produce much better results imho

ffvfw will be faster I think. You can produce DivX 3 (MS-MPEG4 v3) bitstreams and normal MPEG-4 (DivX 4/5, XviD) bitstreams with nearly the same quality (same encoding engine), just features like B-frames etc. are only availble with MPEG-4. The quality will be better than DivX 3, also without b-frames etc.

Edit: XviD will of course offer better quality
