Favorite quality DVD backup
(I am sure this has been asked in the past, but ... to get a fresh look with all the new technology coming out)
What in your opinion is the process to get the NICEST QUALITY looking DVD backup? Whether it be the entire DVD or just the main movie. What process gives you the nicest QUALITY looking picture IN YOUR opinion? I have heard some say just using the main movie gives you a better picture and others say they can make a very good rip of their entire DVD. I am curious of what everyone thinks. And also ... is the time you put into it worth the quality, or can you get nearly the same quality with less time using different apps. Any replies would be useful because I am just learning and have read so many different opinions in the different forums and guides.

(Also: I see a lot of people saying they use Scenarist ... I know this site is completely against Cracks and Warez ... but how many people here actaully shelled out thousands of dollars for that program? Or is there a cheaper version I am not seeing?)

Rule 12) How NOT to post on this forum:
Do not ask "what's best" because this question cannot be answered objectively. Each and everyone has their own view about what's best in a certain area. The best is what works best for you!
With that said, what are you looking to do? Full DVD backups that you can burn onto a DVD-R or a file that you can play back on your computer?
Edit:
Damn man 4 min response to my post!

However I will give you MY favorite ways.
Movie only where movie is greater than 2:00 is dvd2svcd with CCE using all defaults.
movie only where movie is 1:30 - 2:00 is dvd2one version 1.3.0
Full disk backup I use InstantCopy
Putting more than one movie onto dvd-r I use dvd2svcd on All movies I want and changing the "cd size" and then dvd2one to join.
I am sure that people here would give you MANY MANY more examples of what THEY do. However, just because I say I use these doesn't make them "THE BEST"...

Of course everyone has their favorites ... I figure as much ... Like I said I have read MANY different opinions in these forums and guides. I just wanted to get some more opinions and see if there was one more than others perfered by everyone.
As for the type of backup ... I have transfersed some DVD's to Divx and they came out pretty good. Re-encoded it and burned it to a DVD-R (using only the main movie). So if anyone has any other ideas on using just the main movie that they prefer better ... feel free for suggestions.
And I would also like to try a full back-up as well. I was reading a few of the guides ... and started using THE BIG THREE guide ... I was going along fine until I realized that Scenerist cost about $20,000 and up. Unforntunately I don't have that kind of money to spend. Any other ideas with less cost involved.
Thanks to Dvd Maniac for his response.

PS ... DVD Maniac ... Instant Copy ... that's for Full backups of a DVD? Where do I find a guide/software for that? I don't remember seeing that guide. I will look again though.
Thanks again for replies
Bryan
PSSS ... I just read up on a couple of your methods you like ... Dvd2one in particular ... it was in the Speed over Quality section of the guides ... you said you use that for movie only when movie is 1:30 to 2:00 long, correct? How does the quality come out on that?

Hi,
I use dvd2one mostly on low action, animation and kids films because I find the video quality inferior. If the film is 1:30 or less then using dvd2one shouldn't make that much of a difference. If however I use it to do something like LOTR or Harry Potter, Braveheart... Something over 2 hours and/or High action scenes, then I do see a difference. I will probably dump dvd2one all together and go with the new instantcopy 8, since it allows for movie only now as well as full disc backup and even partial backup. You can keep the whole movie and extras and selectively leave out the extras you don't want. I will use this for everything now except movie only over 2 hours (I will still use dvd2svcd with CCE for that) Well maybe I will still need dvd2one for easily joining multiple movies. I just put the Rambo and Die Hard series onto one dvd-r each. Using first dvd2svcd on the movies, then dvd2one to join them.
Hope all of this mess helps you instaed of confusing you.

Instantcopy is real EASY to use. No real guide is required. However if you get it and need assistance, just ask.

Not confused at all. How much is the instant copy software? It has good quality?
I just ran Dvd2one for a try ... actually I am not quite finished yet. I have used it to shrink the VOBs but I seem to have a problem creating an ISO disk of the files. I tried to use IMG tool ... but for some reason the VTS files won't show up in the folder. So then I tried using my own software I already had (Roxio 6) ... which allowed me to created the image, BUT when I burned it to a DVD-WR it wouldn't play on my DVD player. ( Sony Precision Cinema Progressive Scan) So I am reading a few extra things and trying something else right now to see if it works.
The DVD2one is very easy to use. Takes a lot less time then for me to encode my DVD to Divx. I did Bulletbroof Monk to DIVX for my first project and it came out really nice ... even after I re-encoded it and burned it to a DVD-R.
Anyhow ... thank you very much for your replies and I am interested in checking out the Instant Copy ... I will look for it.

Add-on ... I just reread your post again because I didn't catch all of that last part. But now I see ... so how does that come out putting all those movies on one Dvd-R? You mean so they are playable on your DVD standalone, correct? I have heard a few others talk about it but I never really checked out any methods of how to do it. But I understand how you say you do. As I said I just tried the DVD2one program and I have read how to make dvd2svcd ... so that sounds pretty easy.
@ Steve ... I made the mistake of not reading RULE 12 ... so I tried to change the word "Best" ... I did not realize you were so strict here about wording. Please tell me what I've worded wrong if my edit is not satisfactory so I will not make the same mistake twice.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Do not ask "what's best" because this question cannot be answered objectively. Each and everyone has their own view about what's best in a certain area. THE BEST IS WHAT WORKS BEST FOR YOU!
That's all I am trying to figure out by trying different methods and getting other's opinions and comments for enlightenment. :)

hi
sorry but i still do not like the formulation of the post, neither the subject. pls change both or i will close this thread.
maybe, you'll want to ask: "what do you guys use when you go for quality/speed"
for my part that is 'Big 3' for quality, or just Doitfast4u CCE and scenarist and for speed I use DVDShrink, main movie copys only though.

I did not realize you were so strict here about wording
They are only strict because if you ask "What's Best?" then people will start getting into HEATED debates and the question can only be answered by what the person wants to do, How much user time, what stand alone player, budget, etc...
What's Best for me is not always what's best for others. So do not take it personally, They (Moderators) are just trying to make this the most productive video/audio site on the net. Which, by the way "IT IS".
how does that come out putting all those movies on one Dvd-R?
The quality is definitely watchable. I would not put LOTR fellowship and Two Towers onto one disk because the quality of those movies along with the long length would make it not as enkoyable. But watching say the Rambo trilogy, which are all short movies and the special effects are not impressive in comparison, I didn't mind. Only saw a SLIGHT difference in quality squishing them to one dvd-r. And yes, it is very easy to do for me.
Well, good luck on your "QUEST FOR THE BEST" at least your best.
hehe, just kidding.

Haha ...
I understand I just didn't think that people got that out of hand. I thought everyone was grown adults here (most of us). I read on the Generel Forum they just banned talk of polictics for the same reason. It's sad that people have to get that worked up over things (the posters that is, not the Mods) I just wanted to make sure that was all I was saying wrong. Obviously there have been problems in the past.
But back to my search for enlightenment ... I was reading up on Instant Copy a little before work today and I saw some people said it didn't work on all DVD's (protected) ... that you had to use a 3rd party device as well. What did they mean?
Thanks for all the information though ... I appreciate the time and explanations. It's been a great help in addition to the library of information available on Doom9
@ Steve ... Yea I see that, thank you for explaining and DVD Maniac as well. I can see how poeple could take politics so serious because that's just how people are. But I NEVER would have imagined that people could get so bent out of shape discussing their favorite methods of transfering their DVDs to DVD-R(W). Also I thought that is what they meant but I was not sure, thanks for the verification KSpree.

well, sometimes adults can behave like kids ;)
anyway, iirc almost all of the rules resulted directly from happenings in the forum. for example, the no political discussion rule, was only made because discussions about the war on Iraq have threatened to go way out of hand and therefore endangered the good climate we have around here.

true, iirc you have to use a seperate DVD ripper (e.g. DVDdecrypter, smartripper or vstrip) to get your files to your harddrive before 'feeding' them to IC
