I need to know if anyone else who has a GeForce4 440 MX with TV out has problems with the blending of colors. I've noticed that colors tend to have obvious shades creating a solarisation effect on color belnds. More noticeable on dark blends.

I was watching a DVD of Finding Nemo and noticed that some underwater scenes exhibit a great deal of solarisation where the light is shining through the water from above. No such problems on the PC monitor.

Someone mentioned that my TV out may not have a very good color bitrate rendition rather like the difference between 16bit and 32bit color?

I dunno. I know my old Matrox G400 didn't have this problem from what I recall. Sadly I am unable to use it on this motherboard.

The card is made by some company called XFX. Could it just be that this company has a lousy TV out?

Dunno what you mean with solarisation, but if it's rainbowed edges, try using S-Video instead of composite, if that's what you're using.

Solarization is incorrect word for this.
Your problem is that card's TV out has low-bit D/A converter. Therefore color tranzitions are too visible, especially on dark parts.
Right, it's similar like 16 bit mode on monitor.

Solution is simple buying better card.

Thanks, ppera2-

A guy had a question about this recently in my forum and said he was using a GeForce 4 440 MX card. He was complaining about not having smooth transitions between colors and blamed it on the codec. This problem is sometimes called "banding", right? I told him to check if he was using 16 bit color. And now I learn it's that lousy NVidea card that's responsible for it. Thanks again!

Yes banding is a better term to use. Sounds about right with the D/A conversion. The Matrox cards are superior in this respect although their control over overscan could be a little more user friendly.

I may have to go grab a Matrox P650 a bit later on. I love TV out and use it a lot for movies and anime so it's essential that I get a good TV out image. 3D comes in pretty much last as I am not a big gamer.

hi guys,
just wanted to confirm that nvidias TV out on the geforce 4 mx cards is lousy. i got the 460 version, but on a larger TV those banding issues are almost unacceptable :/

on an older TV like the one I have it doesn't matter as much though...

The film effect of DivX helps overcome this effect: try turning it up to full strength. Unfortunately this won't help you with DVD playback.
