Hi everybody!

I want to add subtitles to an avi but I only have the .SUB file (the kind with hieroglyphics which are not understandable) and no .IDX file.
Is there a way I can do this??

Rerip from the DVD.

You could convert them to a text-based subtitle file using subrip's OCR routines. Simply open the .sub as you would open a vob ...
You will have to resync the subs, though ... it is definitely easier to re-rip the .sub/.idx set.

My problem is: I don't have the DVD at hand. So I guess I have to live without subtitles since it's too much work to edit a text file.

Thanks anyway!

oops !!!

you can't do nothing cause the .idx file is a text file that contains
among others the time that every subtitle appears in the movie !!!

sorry
